"Filler". Unless the mother is dead and that's why Ted was so desperate to get more time with her.

Although, it would have been awesome if Barney had hired all the doppelgangers to convince Ted to do something that would cheer him up and would have been a good way to close out that joke. Unfortunately the episode did not go that way.

It was a lovely sentiment. Filler is probably I fine word, but because it tends to carry negative connotations, I'll avoid it. I'll call it set-up instead.

It wasn't an all time great or anything, but I laughed a lot, I was constantly intrigued, and moved by the sentiment..

How did they not have a choreographed dance-off between Marshall and Robin involving the whole bar and/or street? That's the only thing that could have saved this mindfuck of a lame episode. The song at the end came close, but didn't quite save this hot mess.

I enjoyed this past episode. It had the mix of silly and serious/sentimental. The show has always used different plot devices to play with time to tell a story or develop a pivotal moment with a character. Each character has had a defining sad moment or moment of catharsis when they realize something about themselves. Lili cracked under being a new mom, Marshal dealing with his father's death (you could argue the early Marshal and Lili break up as something, too), Robin's no children story and Barney breaks yelling at his dad for never being there for him.

This episode used the boozy haze of sitting alone in a bar to tell things that happened in the past that Ted remembered fondly with doppelgängers and time travel. I think we've seen Ted near this point several times, and maybe this is setup for Ted to be at peace with himself--how to be alone and find the difference between doing things that bring fulfillment to his life (his work, interests, teaching, friends) or meaningless choices out of fear (hitting on the Glee teacher) and going to Robots vs. Wrestlers.

As for the sentimental speech at the door to the mother, it does add more weight to "the mother is dead" theory, but I think it's more Ted's future self remembering that low point and wishing he'd met her sooner because he'd reached such a lonely point. As for using Billy Joel's The Longest Time, I'd guess it's a sentiment Ted's feeling at that moment--wanting to be inspired by love.

I think For The Longest Time was used because it's an a cappella song with a lot of harmonies.

I liked it!

So much so that it might have been one of my favourite HIMYM episodes.
