I can see one of these three scenarios being true...

1. He was in on it the whole time as a way to drum up publicity.
2. He was not in on it and lied about meeting her, talking with her family, etc.
3. He was either fully in on it, partially in on it, or believed in the hoax to cover up his homosexuality (a stretch I know, but it is within the realm of possibility).
