"That flag on top of the General Lee made a statement that the values of the rural south were the values of courage and family and good times.
Our beloved symbol is now being attacked in a wave of political correctness that is unprecedented in our nation of free speech and free expression. Activists and politicians are villifying southern culture and our heritage as being bigoted and racist. We know that this is not the case. And we know that in Hazzard county there was never any racism."

What gets me about all this is that the confederate flag didn't even fly on state grounds until the 60's, right around the time of civil rights. They sent a clear message what they thought the flag meant.
If they decide to build a monument, or some museum, then by all means, fly all the flags of the war, including the various confederate ones. Otherwise, there really isn't any place for it.

This reminds me of the fact that currency and the Pledge of Allegiance weren't plastered with God talk until the 1950s. A lot of these "traditions" sure have a way of targeting disadvantaged classes.
I stopped into a bar tonight in Williamston, NC and found myself in a discussion about how the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. It was fought because the North taxed Southern cotton.
