I mostly just thought it was funny. CGI isn't advanced enough yet for those kind of prolonged close-ups.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I liked this; beautiful shots/scenery/tone. I'd be really surprised if Leo wins an Oscar for this though.

The Oscar is his. He doesn't deserve it, but he has it.

Who would you give it to this year? I haven't seen nearly as films as you but I'm having a hard time thinking of memorable performances.

It's been a slow year for leading male performances. I think the best I've seen was probably Kurt Russell in The Hateful Eight.

That one's on the list to see.

I'll have to watch it again as it wasn't in the theatre, but I thought it looked good.

I actually thought "its amazing how CGI animals can look so close to the real thing, but CGI humans even in wide shots are so fake." There were a few shots where the bear was very obviously CGI though.

I thought this was fantastic.

As for the Leo/Oscar hype, I think people get too hung up on what an actor had to go through for the role vs. nailing a really compelling/complex character. Yeah, Leo doesn't have any great moments and did a lot of grunting, but I don't think there was much there to work with. However, I do appreciate the lengths he went to. There's a scene where he wades into a freezing-cold river, catches a fish with his bare hands, and bites right in to it. It's all one shot, so you know that's him actually grabbing the fish and eating it while it's still alive.

I have a simple test for what I consider to be a great performance: can the actor make me forget he's an actor? Tom Hardy absolutely did. Leo was fine, but I was always like "That's Leonardo Dicaprio."

I saw this today. I liked it, but my brother, sister and I all agreed that Tom Hardy was superior to Leo.

I watched The Gift last night. Nothing exploded in that movie at all, but I still enjoyed it.
