Albums of 2016

I understand the raising of an eyebrow at some podunk band who nobody has ever heard of "leaking" their new album but it's hardly as though Tim Hecker falls under that category. I find difficult to believe it was engineered by him or someone at his label, what would be the point in his circumstance?

I wonder how long before hard and fast release dates disappear altogether -- it was a big excitement-builder back when people would wait in line outside Best Buy on Tuesday mornings to buy new CD's, but these days it seems like a lot more buzz is created when artists just drop new albums out of nowhere.

And announcing three or even four months in advance? insanity. By the time it comes out, the buzz of a new album has died. I can't believe bands are still doing that.

I can understand this line of thinking to a certain point, considering how instantaneous everything is today. On the other hand, for more mid-level artists, it still makes sense, especially if you're preparing a vinyl release. With the cost of manufacturing vinyl, and the backlogs at pressing plants, it's probably a good idea to get a steady stream of preorders going to help with the funding and make the whole process a little more worthwhile.

Going back to the subject of the Tim Hecker album itself, from what I've read so far, it sounds like it's a really good album with a new direction for his sound. I've liked his stuff in the past, at least on a track-at-a-time basis, but I usually can't focus on it for a whole album at a time. Perhaps this one will be the one to change that, and maybe be a key to the rest of his stuff. At the very least I want to listen to it and see how it is.

It kinda sounds like an Enjoy Eternal Bliss song with more vocals. Not particularly interesting, at least after one listen.

Looking forward to the new Hexvessel album:

The album is seriously not good and it's breaking my heart.

They've somehow changed from this spectral, spooked pagan folk-rock outfit into a lumpy, unremarkable rock band.

I'm now questioning everything I loved on their previous records. Was I wrong all along?
