Looks like it's going to be a Revenant sweep on the big categories.

I'm going to start saying I am boycotting parties that I am either not invited to or have no plans to go to.

The institution is racist. This isn't new. All this political grandstanding is so fucking lame. Lee was just talking about how proud and excited he was to be getting an Oscar a few weeks ago. He just now suddenly realized there's a racial bias? Fucking bullshit. And I'm sure Pinkett-Smith's outrage is in no way related to her husband not being nominated. Yeah, okay.

It's all bullshit.

The thing about Jada Pinkett-Smith's argument that makes it invalid is that her husband's move was awful. Just awful.

I really wanted to like "Concussion." I think what the NFL has done is horrific, but the movie was bad and Will Smith was fucking terrible. He did not deserve a nomination for that shit.

I can't believe she tried to argue that begging for validation from this institution is demeaning. What the hell do you call your outrage over this?

I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Fury Road was very much about feminism and class warfare, though. Don't fool yourself into thinking ideology isn't at play there too.

Are you sure? Furiosa didn't keep telling Max to stop holding her hand

I don't need themes to see that it was an exceptionally well constructed and paced story that replaces the overreliance on wish fulfillment that is bogging down today's large scale movies with good old fashioned dramatic arcs.

tragabigzanda wrote:This is interesting, from Wiki:

"In a July 2014 interview at San Diego Comic-Con International, Miller said he designed the film in storyboard form before writing the screenplay, working with five storyboard artists. It came out as about 3,500 panels, almost the same number of shots as in the finished film. He wanted the film to be almost a continuous chase, with relatively little dialogue, and to have the visuals come first. Paraphrasing Alfred Hitchcock, Miller said that he wanted the film to be understood in Japan without the use of subtitles."
Which is awesome in theory. I don't think he accomplished that well in practice.

I get why people love this movie. I just don't think it's as spectacularly constructed and executed as others do. The set-pieces are fine, but they never truly rise to being memorable to me. It's cool that so much was accomplished practically, but they're lacking in the lyricism and sensuality necessary to make a sequence like that really soar. Hell, the set-pieces in the first three Mad Max films are all better directed and edited.

It will be fun to watch all the white liberal movie makers call for more diversity while accepting their rewards this year.

Hahaha!
Honestly, I'm so tired of this shit. We've had years where the Oscars go all black, complete with weepy-eyed Oprah moments and all that shit, but then we have a couple of years without a blacktor included in the best actor category and the whole world explodes. Jesus, if there isn't a performance good enough by a blacktor to warrant a nod, then just accept that and move on!
