It's an interesting version. I'm almost not sold on it, until Mike really digs in around 4:08. He takes that song to another level when he goes off, and I think he struggles for the first half here: his early licks are kind of bland, and he can't get the same feedback with his hollow-body and the lower volume -- It seems like he hasn't really connected with the song. Then at 4:08 his hand's a blur, and he's got the funny mask, and it just makes me feel something great.

I've just listened to these back to back (not that my vote would change). I'll try to express my feelings though it'll fall short.
What struck me first up is that Jack really shines on IMT but I don't really feel that anyone else does. Ed starts off strong and ends with melodies that aren't as strong. The band seem to have difficulty following Jack , maybe these are those parts that a few of them wish they'd had more time with. The loose messy feel may have been desired, I'm not taken by it though. It comes off as a take that could have been improved on. Ultimately it doesn't reach as high as it aims however it is a part of the journey of PJ that leads us to.....
Nothing As It Seems. A band with the confidence to leave space, to let the room speak. This song, no the recording has gravitas. The vocals are how Ed should age. He knows the range for this song. He doesn't reach when he doesn't need to. He can't really, to do so would be against the song.
Let's talk about Matt. This track has Pearl Jam's greatest snare sound. There's a tolling to it that matches the dirge of Stone's ever steady death march. It matches Mike's coil reverb. It heralds in the China cymbal. This snare ties the track together with heavy chains. The percussive choices made in pre production for this track probably outweigh all the band's input on Backspacer or LBolt. Matt cared. He was as invested in this session as he was with SuperUnknown, another fine example of drum and snare sounds, maybe the best example of the last 25 years.
Mike shines here. It'd be a fine song without him but his contribution sends this out of the stratosphere. There's thought, there's feeling, there's string noise and amp noise. There's no finer example of his playing on record. Sure he's hit cleaner notes, sure he's played some patterns but where is the feeling? It's here in spades.
And ever present behind all of this is Jeff and Stone laying a foundation that is rolling in swampy murkiness, a smoky inability to focus, to swim against this rip is futile so let go and just feel.
There's no other song like this track. It is my favourite now having recently wrested pole position from Tremor Christ, another that takes the best of each member to unfathomable heights.

Great post. I loved reading it, and I agree on a lot of your sentiment. That video is spectacular. It's easy to forget just how powerful and gifted this band was. That video is a perfect example of why PJ will always be, deep down, my absolute, all time favorite band.

It was a nice post, and that's a helluva NAIS version, but I gotta disagree with lms. No one, except Jack, shines on IMT? Malarky!

A vote for In My Tree is hardly a vote against Nothing As It Seems, friend.
Yes. It is.
Yeah, in this round that is exactly what it is.
You guys, uh, you guys don't really understand the -- you know what, never mind. Go NAIS!

Great post, LMS. But I gotta go with what I consider the stronger composition, performance, and recording. "In My Tree" for me.

Jeff's hat is outstanding!
I hate when people record the band but only focus on Ed.
But what a great version of the song.

I can't find my old comment to quote it, but Mike is tapping into some kind of sorcery on NAIS. Just brutal, haunting, nostalgic, and uplifting all rolled up into this warm blanket that Stone wraps around it.
