Most of the "full band" YL's end up being just Mike and Ed on the stage anyway, so I'm not sure why the AFC version should be excluded

"YL" has a strange trajectory as a live song. Early versions have always felt a little on the "improvised" side for my tastes -- the band felt their way through them, tentatively but deliberately. As the song appeared more frequently, it gained definition, but gradually came to feel more like a gesture than a performance -- a sort of end-credits fanfare that plays over the final minutes of every show. The TFC performance is right in the sweet spot between those two extremes-- and the fact that Mike has to handle the rhythm and lead throughout makes it a particularly strong performance from him. I'd add also that we have no other professional recordings from '97 and very few from '96, so including this would be a way to shed some more light on an underrepresented era.

As I said in the beginning, I think bringing in some of the more novel performances of the familiar songs will help keep the compilation exciting. The idea of coming up with a consensus on single best versions seems futile -- so many of these songs have been played so many times, and the arrangements seldom change. What makes one version of "Corduroy" from 2000 better than another? Ultimately we're going to be using very small differences for criteria, and more often than not I suspect people will make choices based on versions they've been longest familiar with, not necessarily ones that are inherently better, because in a lot of cases the differences are so slight. Over, what, 12-13 discs (?), variety will be an asset -- variety in sound character, variety in type of performance, variety in era, etc. No way it's not going to sound kind of "mongrel"-ish anyway, might as well play it up.

I'll do up a spreadsheet sometime this week.

The one from Utrecht is the one that comes to mind for me. That one's great.

I like the idea of the Unplugged "Oceans," but is the non-DVD-rip version of high enough quality to use? Spenno will boycott the comp if we use an "Ohhh, Beeaugh" version of "Oceans."

i really like the melbourne 98 version of solat. its so slow and groovy with jack on the throne and i just love ed's "free of suggestion" tag.

As I recall, I paid $50 (maybe $60) for the Tibetan Freedom Concert triple CD just for the Beck and PJ songs. This has always been my favorite version of Yellow Ledbetter.
