My 20 yo daughter had been working in the disability support industry here the past 12 months or so. Unfortunately she was in an organisation with a really shit corporate culture working in a particularly toxic area. She got some good basic skills and was paid well there but I was very happy when she chose to not re-up her contract with them as I feel they were messing with her mental health in the end.

So she's been bumming around the place as an unemployed yob the past few weeks. She's not an academic but is smart and funny and personable. I've never been concerned about her as far as prospects go as she has (imo) the 2 most important characteristics of a good employee - reliability and common sense. She kept at it and applied to jobs at a similar pay grade to where she left and just got news that she got a permanent job at a similar organisation doing straight admin work, same pay, better hours (no shifts) and (seemingly) a far better corporate environment. I'm really proud of her.

My son is still on holiday in Europe for another few weeks. He's done Greece, done Croatia, done jumped out of a plane above the Swiss alps and has done Tomorrowland. Currently in Amsterdam, I assume blazed off his scone. I'm proud of him too.

As with his trip to the US last year, I post a Daily Banger to a shared Messenger Chat we have each day. Yesterday's was possibly the most legitimate actual Banger I've posted this trip so far:

She got some good basic skills and was paid well there but I was very happy when she chose to not re-up her contract with them as I feel they were messing with her mental health in the end.

So she's been bumming around the place as an unemployed yob the past few weeks. She's not an academic but is smart and funny and personable. I've never been concerned about her as far as prospects go as she has (imo) the 2 most important characteristics of a good employee - reliability and common sense. She kept at it and applied to jobs at a similar pay grade to where she left and just got news that she got a permanent job at a similar organisation doing straight admin work, same pay, better hours (no shifts) and (seemingly) a far better corporate environment. I'm really proud of her.

My son is still on holiday in Europe for another few weeks. He's done Greece, done Croatia, done jumped out of a plane above the Swiss alps and has done Tomorrowland. Currently in Amsterdam, I assume blazed off his scone. I'm proud of him too.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

if they or even one LOVE baseball, nut up and let them go for it. damn the torpedoes.

He’ll have to decide if he wants to fully commit to this (which means skipping birthday parties and all the rest) at age 7. I don’t think he’ll choose that even if he makes the team.

Don't make it his decision. That's too much to give up (imo) for most 7 year olds.

After tryouts, some kids made the team, some didn’t, and some were invited for a second tryout to finalize the roster.

My kids are both in that middle group - didn’t make the team nor got cut after first round of tryouts, invited to call-backs.

They both decided to take a pass at this point because even if they did make the final roster, they don’t want to commit to baseball over birthday parties and such.

Maybe next year.

Are you disappointed?

Just celebrated eldest's 5th birthday by gathering some neighborhood friends and their kids to the lake pool/restaurant for some cake, presents and swimming. He had gotten quite close to one of the families, along with my wife to the mom. Shame they're all moving across the country soon. I'm sure he'll make new friends. Just sad though.

Just celebrated eldest's 5th birthday by gathering some neighborhood friends and their kids to the lake pool/restaurant for some cake, presents and swimming. He had gotten quite close to one of the families, along with my wife to the mom. Shame they're all moving across the country soon. I'm sure he'll make new friends. Just sad though.

Disappointed that they didn’t make the team on the first try? No - one is borderline but the other just isn’t there.

Disappointed that the better one doesn’t still want to do it? No - too young for this in my opinion.

We all wanted to see how they stacked up in the tryouts. Had they both made the team we may or may not have accepted the invitations.

This is really our family’s introduction, though, about how the twins aren’t always gonna get everything the same.
