I think the thing that's been odd about the reviews this time is that so many of them (like this one), read like descriptions of the album rather than actual reviews of it. I doubt this is unique to PJ, but maybe I'm just noticing it more here because I'm reading more reviews of a particular record, instead of just one here and there.

I feel like this can happen with "legacy" bands, it's the like the writers feel they've gone beyond critique

Does RS give a rating to the album at all? I don't see any.

I'm just shocked they spent any time on music at all, to be honest.

This is a cool line from the clash review (which said DM is their best album this century)

Scared of fear: ... it sounds like Pearl Jam finally relaxing into their mythology.

Can't wait to see how much Pitchfork loves this album

I expect Pitchfork to give this a 4.5 to 5.5 rating. I don't think they will rate it as highly as they did Gigaton (6.2).

And I say that because Pitchfork has historically not liked vintage PJ, which is what this album is kind of hyped up to be (aside from WFS, I don't think it is).

I figure you have to apply a +1.5-2.0 "translation" to whatever Pitchfork says. It won't be acceptable for them to actually call this good. Same with Gigaton.

In their defense, Pitchfork was provided with plenty of ammo to write less than favorable reviews for previous albums. If they do likewise with this beautiful beast then they are just plain wrong and can go shit on a stick.
