Yeah, I've never heard it live. I'm not big on Waits live. Yet. I'm working on it. But ... with the striking exception of an old live cut of Heartattack and Vine, I much prefer his studio stuff. His possessed carnival barker thing is awesome. But he often loses the melodies that I love so much.

You won't lose any melody on "What's He Building?" -- he just ad-libs extra stuff that deflates the spooky vibe of the piece and turns it into more of a comedy routine. It sounds dumb, but when you're swept up in his personality, it's golden.

WHB? has always walked a fine line with me as far as that goes. He masterfully stays of the creepy terrorist holy shit side of the thing in studio, but it's not hard for me to imagine it tipping the other way.

But, yeah, I could listen to Tom Waits perform just about anything. He's really got some kind of wicked magic.

there's just something about him that makes me automatically check every preconceived idea about what music should sound like or what I will enjoy at the door.
