That was a nice cover. I expect to fly through these early albums because they are short and because I am eagerly working to get into the middle and late Beatles stuff that I love.

Historically, yes, absolutely. I'm personally not interested in anything prior to Rubbersoul.
hard day's night has always been a personal favorite of mine. some of that has to do with the movie.

A Hard Day’s Night - I would say there’s marginal improvement but this still feels like a nice little band with nothing to say. The second half I enjoyed more than the first. Any Time At All, Things We Said Today, You Can’t Do That, and I’ll Be Back we’re my favorites, but listening straight through isn’t easy because everything really melds together. I did like the songs the best so far individually though.

Beatles For Sale - much of the same as the last 3 albums, and the same criticism that the songs individually are good but collectively I feel nothing. It’s like eating a hard candy, it’s got a nice sweet flavor and then it’s gone and all you are left with is a wrapper to toss away. That being said, I liked No Reply, the cover of Rock and Roll Music, Kansas City, the cover of Words of Love, Honey Don’t, and Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby.

Help! - the development here is a sharp improvement from the prior 4 albums. These might be another 14 love songs, but they appear more mature and thought out, and finally they don’t all meld together. This would be what I would call the first great Beatles album. Help!, The Night Before, Hide Your Love Away, I Need You, Ticket to Ride, Act Naturally, I’ve Just Seen a Face, Yesterday, and Dizzy Miss Lizzy are all essential Beatles. I was beginning to worry that maybe I totally lost my taste for this band but this brought me back in. No more until tomorrow when we really get into the good stuff.

Independent of the individual album reviews I will say this: I would take early Rolling Stones over early Beatles by a very large margin - that is Stones from The Rolling Stones through Aftermath vs. Beatles from Please Please Me through Help! - though Help! is great.

Hey liebzz, good work with these. I did the Beatles discography earlier this year and the growth was astounding. Given the roots of the band were so strong, the way they adapted to the studio was what stood out so much for me. Ringo in particular comes in for massive criticism from certain folks but he really was mercurial in the studio. He simplified his playing creating space that the others including George Martin benefited from.

Interesting comment because I think often times drummers in particular are judged only by their technical proficiency and not artistry. I never had a moment, anywhere in those first five albums, where I even really noticed or paid specific attention to Ringo.

It's interesting how differently we all hear this stuff - I find the Rolling Stones (with a few rare exceptions) a totally musically uninteresting band but the Beatles almost endlessly amazing. I would take the first few Beatles records over literally anything the Stones ever did and it's not even remotely close.
There's original Beatles songs from those early years that are (in my mind) just as strong as their later material (There's a Place, All I've Got to Do, She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, This Boy, I Should've Known Better, And I Love Her, No Reply, I'm a Loser, etc.)
They were just exceptional songwriters.

You could argue that that is the sign of a decent drummer.

I agree with 100% of this. It always saddens me to hear people wave off the Beatles' early material -- the craftsmanship in those songs, those performances, is extraordinary. "This Boy" floors me every time.

Introducing The Beatles is one of my favorite albums.
