I honestly am not sure I am smart enough to keep up with so many new characters. If it wasn't for the series, I'm not sure I could've kept up with Storm of Swords. I had to keep referring to a wiki link character chart.
I think that's what I liked the most about FoC. Beginnings are always more interesting to me than endings. And FoC feels like a beginning. We get so many new, fascinating characters. And it doesn't hurt that Arya is my favorite character and her best stuff is in that book. Plus I love all the subtle stuff, the stuff you don't pick up on right away. There are so many WTF! moments, so many bizarre twists. I don't really try to keep expert track of everything. There's too much if you've only read them through once.

the desolation of Westeros is the most compelling aspect, IMO.

That. And the King'smoot, Arya (of course!) and the bookends are brilliant. I love the feminist aspect of the book. There are so many woman kicking ass and making plans. This is the book where so many of the secondary themes jump to the forefront and where I think Martin really builds an endgame structure. So many great ideas, so many great women.
Is it just me or did Tyrion just take a book off in that one? Or did he come into play later in the novel? I remember missing him and Jamie, who turned into one of my favorite characters. Maybe I just didn't get through all the new characters to see what was up with the older ones.

I think it's cute that the show-runners and HBO think the series will be 7 seasons, and Martin thinks it'll be 10.

I can see them getting A Dance with Dragons in 5 seasons, but there's material there to fall into a 6th season. I think Martin may be hinting at the length of the last 2 books with the 10 estimate. Waiting for the books to come out, they should do a Dunk and Egg miniseries.

Actually if Martin stopped writing about food, each book would only be about 500 pages.
