Dan Bern has long been one of my very favorite artists, and maybe the only thing I listen to that few other people know. Which means, excepting maybe Letmesleep, I can't really talk about him on RM. Since this is maybe the only time anyone might listen, I agonized for a long time about what song to pick. This one of his more epic pieces (he's one of the few songwriters that can regularly hold my attention for 7+ minute songs), but it's certainly one of his better songs.

It's a story about him getting busted smoking pot with some friends as they were getting ready to go down and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's a great performance (he's often much weaker on his studio albums than he is live), and the song itself really captures his fractured gifts as a writer, the way he grapples with loneliness and love and meaning, his humanity, and his observational profundity.

unfortunately his best songwriting days seem to be behind him. His last few releases, bracketing a few songs, were pretty disappointing.

dan bern is pretty well known, and his gimmicky music has the shelf life of weird al. so this isn't that surprising.

Well weird al has been hugely successful for 30+years, but that aside Dan Bern is a remarkable songwriter (albeit a hugely inconsistent one), and the gimmicked humor songs are really just a small part of what he does. They just require minimal investment and are easy to appreciate on first listen so they tend to be what makes the rounds.

His real problem has always been that his albums just aren't very good. He is a massively prolific writer, but he makes terrible choices in terms of what he should include, and the actual studio recordings sometimes fall flat. God Said No is an amazing piece of songwriting, but the version that made it to the album is kinda lifeless.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with Alex's newfound hostility towards Stip.

looking past the stupid fan video, he has dozens of unreleased songs as good as this one, massively superior to most of what he releases. His decision making process is inexplicable to me.
