Of course I'll go see it, but it's like it looks a little worse every time I watch footage, and JJ's involvement with IX is such a buzzkill.
‘I don’t like the trailer so that means it’s going to be shit and especially cos the totally unrelated choice of directors effect on this one’.
Cool thanks for that.
Take it easy dime, no one is trying to deprive you of your Star Wars joy. I come into this thread once a month, and today I happen to feel like they might be fumbling the new trilogy. You are still free to disrobe and cover your naked body in Mark Hamill tweets and BB-8 cereal. The world will still turn and George Lucas's chin will continue to recede into his neck regardless of my opinions.
Your Buzz for 8 is being killed by JJ directing 9. Don’t let that kill your Buzz.
They’re not fumbling anything it’s in good hands. All of it.
Well it's a combination. There are clips from the trailer for 8 that are having an inverse effect on my excitement. "It's time for the Jedi...to END" just strikes me as a clunky delivery of a corny line. And beyond that, too many of the plot points seem to echo the the OT too closely; Kylo Ren's apparent struggle with the light vs. the dark seems too obviously telegraphed; and -- I swear I'm not trying to get you upset or be disrespectful to Ms. Fisher -- but in the couple shots I've seen of her, A) I am afraid they are going to overly dramatize her role because of her passing (lots of long poignant shots on her even if the narrative doesn't require it) and B) I just think her face looks weird from whatever work/makeup she's had done.
These are all super minor things, and I could very well be wrong on all counts. And I hope that I am, because I want to love the shit out of this movie. But my gut is telling me it will be like a combination of the dark stuff from Empire with the corny stuff from Jedi.
The last Jedi was finished filming and was in the can before Carrie died.
Nothing was shot or recut or edited to cash in or exploit her death.
They simply never would or even could do that. We’re feeling a poingancy cos we know she’s dead. You can’t apply the thought oh they did this to exploit an emotion, when we haven’t seen it, and we’re gonna feel stuff to a certain degree anyways, going in knowing that she’s dead. Your post isn’t cynical but the body of it I do expect to see for months on end from the usual suspects trying to shit on the film just for clicks.
Do you know for certain that the bold part is true? You just might; I know you are rabid for every bit of information related to the movie. But just because her scenes were in the can doesn't mean they haven't edited things in post to make her presence feel more monumental. Case in point, the shot in the trailer from behind her, it just feels like an overly dramatic shot saying "Look! It's the back of Carrie's head! Enjoy the three seconds that the camera will linger here, because she's not around to show you the back of her head ever again!"
Sure this is a somewhat cynical take, but I'm nothing if not detail oriented, and in the absence of a larger context, I see a shot like this and think "Wow, they're really trying to milk her death," because I can't understand why such a shot might be important to the structure of the movie.
We do know for a fact nothing was reshot. Her performance was important enough nothing needed to be tweaked. I know you guys aren’t as tuned in as I would be to the moment by moment news cycle of it but the film didn’t have a single days reshoots and you probably weren’t aware they’ve been left with a ticking time bomb of how to deal with Leia in episode 9 given Carrie has passed. They’ve already dismissed the writer/director they chose cos his story trying to deal with it wasn’t suitable. everyone involved has been open about her being amazing in 8, 9 would have been her film focused on Leia and presumably her relationship with her son, so they had to rewrite and start again with again. With JJ.
You weren’t crazy about the trailer, that’s fair enough but Pointless saying you have a bad feeling about this film cos you don’t like who they chose to direct the film coming after it. Makes no sense.

Thanks dime, good response.
The Last Jedi director teases Carrie Fisher’s final scenes in Star Wars: “Emotional, intense, joyful”
Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson has opened up about General Organa's departure
Star Wars director Rian Johnson has teased Carrie Fisher’s “beautiful and complete” final scenes in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In an interview with USA Today, the director remained tight-lipped about specific details but assured fans that the actress – who tragically passed away last year shortly after completing her work on the film – would receive a fitting farewell.
“I felt very strongly that we don’t try to change her performance,” he said, adding that it will be “really sad, but really joyful”.
Having these scenes in the film recontextualise tragically with her not being here anymore, it’s incredibly emotional,” he said.
“For the next few months, seeing the fans … process the loss and celebrate her as Leia one last time, it’s going to be intense. I think it’s going to be really sad but really joyful, I hope. She really kicks [butt] as General Leia, and I’m happy for that.”
The director also spoke on Leia’s relationship with Poe Dameron, confirming that she sees him as the future of the Resistance.
“She definitely saw that potential in him and in The Last Jedi, we dig into that more. We’ve seen how heroic he is and now we’re going to see him challenged in terms of stepping up to the next level. It takes more than heroics to be a leader, or so I’m told.”

Key phrase. ‘One last time’. And also saying it recontextualises her not being here anymore, so perhaps Leia does die in The Last Jedi? Looks like it was written that way and then Carrie sadly died, no? Or is that a reach?

It’s in the poe Cameron comic series coach. And they are supplemental to the film. It’s not a spoiler. Man.

I wouldn't necessarily call it common knowledge. Not a spoiler though.

Rians comments about Leia are probably more revealing than anything about Poe being slapped. Way more.

There’s a new book about Luke coming out in a few days. In it it has
- Spoiler: show
- Luke at the battle of Jakku taking down several star destroyers with the force, this points to him being all powerful now but also present on the very planet Rey is left on. It’s those destroyers we see her climbing through in TFA. The plot thickens
this stuff isn’t required reading but does supplement the movies as the story group weaves all this stuff across the different platforms.

This is the "myth" book though right? The concept of the book is that it's various stories, myths, and legends going around about Luke but not necessarily "facts" about Luke or stuff that absolutely happened. I'm looking forward to it.

Hmmm, not sure what to make of the description:
"The Legends of Luke Skywalker is a canon junior novel of myths and tall-tales about the legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker written by Ken Liu and will be released on October 31, 2017 as part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi book series."

Legends follows a number of young deckhands working aboard a ship bound for Canto Bight (a casino world featured in the upcoming The Last Jedi). Together, they swap six different stories about Luke, each passed down from a different storyteller. One comes from a droid who claims to have witnessed Luke singlehandedly lead a droid rebellion, while another comes from a tiny, flea-like creature who claims to have had a pivotal role in Luke’s escape from Jabba’s palace. One of the particular highlights is the tale told by a former Imperial engineer, who says that Luke Skywalker was nothing but a piece of propaganda made up by the Rebellion. The real Luke is a con artist named Luke Clodplodder, who orchestrated a massive scam with his friends aboard a ship called the Century Turkey.

The story I’m referencing is from an imperial officers POV on one of the SD’s above Jakku and
- Spoiler: show
- They can see holos of Luke shooting force lightning and then their ships coming down.
You can read the whole excerpt on EWs site.

Right. I'm just saying, the whole point of that book is that it's myths and tales people tell about Luke. The book is designed to be a tall-tales kind of thing. Which is super cool. But also means that the reader is supposed to doubt the stories or take them with a grain of salt.

Yeah, big whoop, so far all the best new canon books have been the junior and young adult novels.
