The band's management can get away with these misguided PR stunts because the band makes great music and we all love the band. If band management worked at any other company, and executed such a poor idea they'd be canned. But, it's Pearl Jam, so it will be tolerated.
Seriously, I know some first-year, entry level PR pros who could execute a better announcement. Pathetic.

Sounds like what Mike was describing when he talked about working on some soundtrack pieces. That would be my guess.

Not to mention they're not yet done making announcements. The countdown is cheesy and, sure, largely misrepresents the amount of interest the public at large has in the band at this point. But still, in the end, big deal.
A smattering of dates is noting to get excited about. Sure, there is probably new music coming but Lebron James probably could have rolled out something better than a countdown clock to North American "tour" dates...

Pretty sweet they are coming to Pittsburgh for the first time in 7 years. The whole Countdown thing was very lame. I mean where the fuck is this new record?

Especially when some of the dates have already leaked and the rest were "no shit they are playing there and not here" dates.

Considering that the first rumored release of MYM was 7/16, I'm guessing we'll get an album announcement on 7/11 and then a third clock counting down to 7/16 and the single.
So what's wrong with that? Stop whining!!!
Seriously? Whining about whining is so 2006. Some people are repeatedly disappointed in this piece of shit club, and for good reason.
Well, there's plenty of great music out there in the wide world. Safe travels!
You're right. There is absolutely no reason I should give a shit about the disappointment caused by a band I've followed since 1991. Thanks, I will now not care that the 10 Club could not organise a piss-up in a brewery.

I think the band legitimately think people care. I blame the fanbois over on the pit and the people who are buying the dog collars. They are really fucking with any realistic understanding the band has left regarding the real public's perception and interest in them.
Every company on earth surveys its customers for good reason - so that they can improve on service.
Has band management ever thought about issuing a simple survey via email? You know, email the fan club members (customers) and ask about what we'd like to see out of management.

And when a good majority of their fans don't live in North America.

So that's my point. Some of this information was already out there, so at some point an announcement was going to be redundant. It would have made more sense to announce an album first, but I think we all know that's coming, as well.

oh come on. The countdown was for fans. And judging by the reaction here people did care. They cared quite a bit. They read that exactly right.
The failure here was not to understand that album information is more exciting than tour information and that expecting album information/new music was a reasonable expectation.

The band doesn't make great music anymore and hasn't done for a long time. And some of us haven't loved them for a long time. I wish I could but meh, worse things have happened.

the funny thing is there will be a lot less excitement for the next countdown, when they hopefully announce something that isn't another run of the mill US nostalgia tour.

My disappointment has driven me to register and post. I am starting to realize that the Wrigley show may very well be the last time I see these guys play live..... ever. I guess if you live anywhere from Nebraska to Florida, a travel excursion is required to see the band from now on, full on with plane tickets, hotels, etc... Just can't do that anymore. I'm too damn old, have kids, responsibilities, etc... I mean, when's the next full tour? 2016 at best? And I'd bet I have a 10% chance of seeing them within an hour or two drive from my Louisville home. It's been 19 years since they played here. We have a brand spanking new downtown arena- I saw the Who there in the Spring. I was fully expecting there would be a date in Louisville because of these two facts.
All that build-up just to have half the country realize they won't be seeing them this tour seems a little near sighted. I guess the countdown gimmick will continue, and I will look forward to album and single news, but to ever expect anything again that is surprisingly satisfying from this band is a bad idea and I just need to get used to it.
Sad to think, but it looks like my Pearl Jam fandom has officially moved on to the "good ol' days" of my youth.
