How so? I’m serious, please clarify. You made an argument that the constitution allows for equal rights for all; ok, fine. It’s certainly a noble part of the document. But the interpretation of the constitution is very often at odds with the needs of state legislatures, where elected officials — often resource constrained, typically in rural states — are tasked with addressing a variety of needs for their constituents. I’m concerned any time a politician, regardless of their political persuasion, prioritizes narrow interests instead of those that serve the greatest number of their voters.

And even if those narrow interests are in fact quite popular with a particular district or other voting block — as was the case with Zooey Zephyr, who coasted to a win by running in a deep blue pocket of the state on an inclusive marketing campaign — the calculus can and should change once they’re in the capital and assigned to committees that draft legislation and carry bills to the floor that drive statewide policy.
