I started watching Heat last night. First time since the theater maybe. Interesting experience, definitely a movie with a foot in two different eras.
Do you know about the Pacino/cocaine backstory thing?
No
Me neither. Please share

It's somehow both dated and also a timeless masterpiece.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

There was a bunch of stuff in the script about how his character had a secret cocaine habit. So Pacino preps for the roll as if he’s a coke head. Then they arrive to shoot, and Mann has cut all those scenes from the script. And Pacino says “Well I built my whole character around that, and what if he still had a cocaine habit but we just don’t see it on screen?” Mann was into it. So if you watch the movie knowing that Pacino’s character has a mean coke habit, it makes a lot of his character’s reactions make more sense.

So are all of Pacino’s other roles secretly on coke too?

Just finished Heat. I love Ashley Judd so fucking much. I know she and Val had a prearranged meeting place and lived happily ever after.

Mann released it as a book a few years ago and its doing pre production for a movie now.
The book has time jumps from 88 to 96 to 2000 and Chris is the main guy in the 2000’s part.
