I’m rekindling all sorts of feelings while listening to The Olivia Tremor Control. Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One was a landmark album for me. I could listen to that one all the way through and just get lost in the textures and tangents and then daydream for the rest of the afternoon.

I’m not sure if this album still “holds up”, but I’m having fun hearing these sounds again. I wish the mystery of music still made me feel the way this album once did.

Can somebody who knows more about music/music theory than I do explain what it is about this (bad) song that sounds so fucking weird? His voice just seems to go up and down in haphazard directions, and the melody seems totally ramshackle and bizarre - like the song's structure is barely holding together. I can't figure out what's going on here.

I saw Jerry Leger & the Situation in Oslo last night, and I was very impressed. They played a sort of Americana and Leger's voice was really impressive. A little Dylan, a little Gary Louris. I'm surprised these guys aren't bigger.

Saw them for a second time last night. A smaller crowd this time. They've got some good songs, and the best seem to be from the forthcoming album. Hopefully they will get the success they deserve.

Can somebody who knows more about music/music theory than I do explain what it is about this (bad) song that sounds so fucking weird? His voice just seems to go up and down in haphazard directions, and the melody seems totally ramshackle and bizarre - like the song's structure is barely holding together. I can't figure out what's going on here.

That is weird. From a quick listen I think it's a timing issue, because harmonically it is very straightforward (mostly moving from C to G). So the song starts and immediately the intro alternates between bars of 6/4 and 4/4, which, okay, is kind of funky, but then the vocals come in after just one pattern and catch you off guard. But you roll with it, and you think it's going to keep doing the same thing, which it does at first, but then immediately there is a very disorienting hanging bar of 6/4. Then it goes back to alternating 6/4 and 4/4 until there are two straight 4/4 bars at the very end of the verse. So when you think you're settling into a pattern, it goes the other way. This isn't even mentioning the very weird vocal melody which, as you said, just sounds haphazard... but it repeats exactly in the second verse. Sounds like it was written backwards. The chorus is pretty generic though. What a bad song
