My wife's grandma has had it for over two months. She has very few symptoms but can't be released from her isolation at the assisted living facility until she has two consecutive negative tests. They only administer the tests every 10 days.

The isolation is not doing any favors to her mental health.

If you're not completely insane by August I don't know what you've been doing this year.

Shouldn't the hospitals have been working on clearing all non-Covid patients from ICU for the last few months? That's what my province has done to ensure it has the ICU beds required if we hit a bad patch. Being at 75% capacity (or close to) without Covid patients seems high, at least higher than where I live is usually at. Our bed shortages are not in ICU but in general care areas usually.
I'm not sure about Texas--I know in Pennsylvania they delayed a ton of non-essential surgeries, but I also don't know that those surgeries were designated for ICU rooms in the first place. I would imagine the problem is more that, especially on Texas, there's no state oversight to make sure that hospitals have a sufficient number of ICU rooms in the first place relative to the population, and that they are holding them open for COVID. Remember Texas reopened a few weeks ago. Again, not sure of the specifics but if you want to suggest this was poor planning I'm CERTAIN there's enough evidence for that.
Houston is home of one of the world's largest medical centers. Texas Children's Hospital has pivoted to accepting adult patients (horrifying for a new parent like me), MD Anderson Cancer Center is unable to accept COVID patients at this time due to the nature of immunity risk in their chemo patients, and as those graphs show, other hospitals are not looking good. Methodist CEO Dr. Boom is in the news locally saying that hospitals typically have a plan to turn certain recovery areas into ICUs in the event of a surge, so that is encouraging. Judge Lina Hidalgo was able to secure funds for an emergency overflow facility at NRG Stadium back in April, but has since shut it down when the governor reopened the state. However, additional funding has been secured to reopen this facility if necessary.

As a state, we put a hold on non-elective surgeries back in March. Governor Abbott let that expire in late April. Yesterday he announced that we are back on that plan. Too little too late, I think.

The situation in Houston and elsewhere in Texas is in no way, shape or form the fault of local governments. When Abbott made the decision to reopen early, he issued executive orders that prohibited local authorities to issue stay-at-home orders, to issue mask mandates, or to do anything else that would slow the growth of the economy and infringe on the rights of Texans. In Houston and other large areas, our forward thinking county officials already had those orders in place. He simply deleted them. He ordered hospitals resume normal operations. This is all on him and his task force full of lobbyists, and it's infuriating that his best response to date has been to stop short of doing anything meaningful and simply "pause" reopening.

So yeah, poor planning. Sounds similar to what happened and is happening in Florida.

All that being said, the major hospitals in the area are, just this morning, claiming that they all have backup plans to increase capacity and combat the surge. Texas Children's pivoting to adult care is an example. I am not overly scared that we will experience a situation in this area that New York or Italy had. Still, if I didn't work at a bar, I would be staying the fuck at home.

Just had a look here - https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/
Surely that death toll for the day in New Jersey is out. It can't be that high all of a sudden......can it?

I wouldn't be surprised if they were going back and reclassifying deaths that they weren't sure about.

That makes sense - especially when you look back over the past few days and it was sitting around 50, and then such a massive jump today

Our Lt. Governor is suing our Governor so more stuff can be open. Maybe he'll kill of a significant portion of the Republican voters.

I see according to that same site - the US managed to break 40k new cases

Yup - that's enough to put me in the 'Fuck Florida' boat. Previously I kind of wondered what it was people had against the place
