I'm not arguing they are choosing the song they think is the best. I do think they are choosing one of the songs they like the best AND that works well as a single AND that makes a bit of a statement. Since 2006 their first single is always the song they play the most of the new album on tour. I don't think they would do that if they didn't at least think it's one of the strongest offerings of the new album. Dark Matter will probably the most played song this tour of the new album. The first single has been a bit of a centerpiece for a long time.

well, I do think Dark Matter is strong, and immediate, and quick -- which might make it "single material"; I like the other two, but they're baffling as "single material"; I hope the more interesting, best stuff on the album, is not that; I hope it requires slightly more involved listening

Well, they played the shit out of Lightning Bolt while genuinely believing it was one of their best songs ever.

Tells you all you need to know about these guys' judgement.

I also don't think they have the best judgement about their own songs. But that is only regarding my own taste of their music.

Running seems to be in the SBWM/Got Some vein of singles and Something Special is along the lines of Sirens. (We don't even know if it will be single yet) They're both catchy. I'm not that baffled. Maybe the the rest of the album is weirder/denser and is not as suitable as singles.

I don't care what they think is their best, they don't like Riot Act

I thought this discussion was about what we think will be this album's best

I'm was talking about Anders point that they deliberately chose weaker songs as singles so the album will seem stronger/they get the weaker songs out of the way. They might be weaker songs, but I dont think that Pearl Jam thinks so.

I do agree that the singles are often not the best songs.

yeah, I get you, but I think I'm coming at that point from a different direction: I don't think they chose "weaker" songs, but they might well have chosen *slighter* songs, with less lasting substance (and that, I think, is exactly what some of us are calling "weaker")

What is the point of singles for Pearl Jam at this point? Probably not to hype the core fandom who will buy the album anyway and buy tickets anyway. They could just drop the album without singles and ALL of the fandom would buy the album anyway.
The only point of singles is to get people who are not hardcore fans back into the mix or into the mix for the first time. Makes sense to release the most immediate songs to do that and then put a cheesy ballad about Eds daughters on top.
