Really wanted to pick him, he's one of my favorites currently out there, but I didn't think he had enough volume to justify picking him. High hopes for Dune later this year.
Same. Very excited about his future. High hopes for this guy.
That run of Sicario->Arrival->Blade Runner 2049 is pretty amazing.

Has good remake potential I think.
I agree, but a remake also has the potential to be really hacky in this case.
The underground stuff is too corny for me, but it has one of the best endings ever.
Yeah the ending is the best. I also think a remake would have to change some storyline due to current day issues and the main theme of the movie being all rapey.

If you don’t mind Korean movies (subtitles), then Oldboy is a modern classic.

He picked Parasite, so he should be fine with it.

I phrased it wrong. I didn’t mean he would never like movies with subtitles, but it’s not always what you are looking for.

Yeah.

LV isn't here to yell at me, but the layout of the house is so important to the movie working.

i don't understand why some of you selected a director and then one of the films the director made. isn't the film built into your team by virtue of selecting the director?

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD MOVIES AND DIRECTORS

Yeah I was conscious of this and avoided it til the end... I just couldn't pass on Fincher. I also didn't pick any movies that had my actors. I even passed on There Will be Blood, which is my favorite movie of the 2000s.

I struggled. I just couldn't think of a movie I like more from the 10s that didn't have Day Lewis in it. Maybe I should've picked a different actor and a couple Day Lewis movies instead, but I figured this was probably a safer bet, because I'm happy with Punch Drunk Love. Maybe not.

I watched it again to be sure and fell even more deeply in love with it. It's so good. On a related note, Day Lewis agreed to meet with PTA to discuss There Will Be Blood because he loved Punch Drunk Love so much.

Some leftovers I would have considered had I been picking:

Network
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
E.T.
Amadeus
This is Spinal Tap
Saving Private Ryan
The Big Lebowski
Memento
City of God
Being John Malkovich
Ex Machina
The Master

John C. Reilly
Adam Driver
Paul Dano
Nicole Kidman
Olivia Coleman
Carrie Coon (but she's more TV I guess)

I think DDL is mostly excellent, but his performance always scream, "Look at me, I am ACTING!"

There's always a disconnect there for me.

Those are the characters you're getting that impression from probably. In There Will Be Blood he plays a man who creates a "likeable", "flashy" character in order to sell oil. In Gangs of New York he plays a larger than life man who is constantly intimidating those around him in order to keep away the rising tides of change. But with a role like Woodcock in Phantom Thread, he is a much more realistic person. The guy becomes the characters he plays, inside out. Every one of his performances is flawless.

I think I've seen all but one of his movies and they all share the same critique.
