I like the idea of this song, but you're right, it goes nowhere (because they were too busy bloating up Sirens probably).

I have no beef with music that "goes nowhere"; most of my favourite music meanders in one mood in interesting ways.

Regardless of whether this song is going anywhere or not, I find the journey insufferably dull.

That's basically what I meant by "does nothing". I just meant it does nothing interesting. Dull sums it up, yet I still keep on trying to like it. I wonder if it will ever happen.

I'm fine with that, too. This song begs to be a song like Long Road, but they seem to be against songs like that on principal, now.

This song sounds both unfinished and cut down. Like someone (ED) didn't want to do anything with it. I think the bones are there, but it needs less structure and more room to explore.

edit: Also, Brendan O'brien is like cancer, if I haven't mentioned that this month.

Eddie tries too hard with his voice to pull of the somber meandering beauty of a song like Long Road these days.

Me too. The weird thing is, Doc's top three Pearl Jam albums are Yield, No Code, and Binaural. Yet...

To be fair, I really enjoyed Force of Nature when Backspacer first came out. But in hindsight I think I was trying way too hard to find things about that album that I liked.

I think we were all doing that to some extent.

It made sense to do so at the time. While S/T was hardly universally adored among the more discerning fans, it had its strong points and it decidedly still felt somewhat like a Pearl Jam record (and the shows from that time were some of the band's tightest).

I'm sure I listened to Backspacer a lot more when it was released than I have Lightning Bolt so far, largely because my expectations of a new Pearl Jam record have been permanently adjusted now - I can't give the band the same benefit of the doubt.

That isn't to say I don't like the new material. I think Lightning Bolt is, on the whole, a better album than Backspacer but I'm just not willing to spend the time trying to uncover hidden depths in songs that I'm already certain aren't any good.
