It's always such a shock to hear this record after so long. It's also always surprisingly good. Obviously a more contemporary alt rock band---full blast electric guitars with plenty of power strokes, amp bleeding (I'm winging it with the terminology here), and Thom often wails with more confidence than on their later records, which seems counterintuitive. And perhaps it's just because he's being louder, angrier, and more angst-y. Though not as well- formed, the compositions are still so Radiohead. There's no doubt about that. There are hints of their later work to be found throughout, especially in the percussion.

My imperfect and assuredly inconsistent 5-star rankings:

You - 4.5 ... I adore this song. The guitar work is savage and Thom sounds raw and powerful. It would be 5 if they would have known how to end it.

Creep - 5 ... The production,mixing,mastering, performance, whatever on this song is perfect. It's their most well-known song still to this day, and I've surely heard it 100s of times, but I can rattle off 5 straight listens right now without a problem.

How Do You? - 3.5 ... Not a bad song at all; The hook is actually a lot of fun and earns it a half point, but it feels like an imcomplete idea and the way it chaotically devolves is pretty meh and feels superficial.

Stop Whispering - 3 ... Lyrically, it certainly foreshadows Thom's echo chamber, panic induced style, but the song itself is unremarkable. This feels like it could be a grower, if it were written by post- 2000 Radiohead.

Thinking About You - 2 ... Not much I feel compelled by with this track. It's a below average acoustic strummer with weak vocals. It has a little boyish charm, but not much.

Anyone Can Play Guitar - 2.5 ... This song is a bit of a bore.

Ripcord - 3.5 ... Ok, still not at the level of the opening tracks, but they've regained my attention. The production on some of these songs is so limp compared to "You" and "Creep" it makes me want to find out more about the recording process. I think this song could be killer with some changes.

Vegetable - 3.51 ... I have to give it the slight edge over the previous track because-- #1 it sounds much better and #2 Jonny's work definitely digs in and cuts you up.

Prove Yourself - 3.75 ... Good, short little punk pop song. The guitar and drum breakdown are quitel memorable.

I Can't - 3.45 ... Their youth and inexperience is what held this record back and that's fine. Just when you think a song is going by to out you to sleep, they spice it up with a neat little bridge or outro like what can be found around the 3:00 mark here. Those moments in abundance are what defines the great Radiohead records.

Lurgee - 3 ... Again, an otherwise slog is allowed to breathe for the last minute and hints at a greater genius ready to break out.

Bow Out - 4.5 ... beeeaaautiful sound here. The cymbals are pristine. Jonny's tone is eerie but gorgeous. Great closer.

Starts strong. Ends strong. A bit weak between the ears but littered with evidence of potential greatness throughout. That might be easy to say with hindsight, but you just know those moments when you hear them with this band.

Could you guys tell me which of Thom's non-Radiohead albums are worth listening to? I listened to The Eraser back in the day but it didn't leave much of an impression; all I can really remember from it is the "we think the same things at the same time" part from "Harrowdown Hill".

His latest was not terribly memorable. The Atoms For Peace stuff is OK. I quite like The Eraser.

I haven't listened to it in quite a while now but I really enjoyed the Atoms For Peace album when it came out, might revisit it soon.

They were playing "Where I End And You Begin". That was a fun night.

Rumors of a West Coast tour for this spring abound right now because they are apparently headlining Coachella. Crossing my fingers in hopes of seeing at least one show...it's been way too long.

I expect an announcement this week now that Coachella was officially announced.

Wow, pretty amazed they're playing portland. 1st time since 96 @ La Luna. Can't wait!

Yeah Santa Barbara is going to be incredible, and the most sought after ticket. I'm happy to do the Greek this time around. Not as good as SB, but still a fantastic outdoor venue.
