There are aspects of it that show she produced it, but these two songs really seem to be dancier, more synth-heavy examples of the progression they were already making on parts of No Cities To Love. It's an easier, tidier story to say they're just trying to be St. Vincent and that made Janet bail, but I'm not sure it explains what's going on.

Agree with this. I think it's just low-hanging fruit based on the promo photos. I was guilty of it, too.

Don't get me wrong; it's definitely there, but it doesn't make the music so much of a departure as to make it logical to jump ship at such a crazy time. It certainly makes me interested to hear the rest of the record, not that I wasn't already. I doubt she had it in mind that this would be her last record when they were making it, as if so (and she'd told Corin and Carrie) I would think they would have tried to get ahead of it a little bit more.

But did they not go on the first hiatus, because Carrie had a nervous breakdown and no longer could handle the attention they were receiving?

I hardly ever listen to the first 2 albums as, no Janet
I never got into Corins solo works / Filthy Friends, because, no Janet
I dug Wild Flag, Carrie had a couple great songs, but, mostly, because Janet
I only have 2 Jicks albums... the ones with Janet...
I have 2 tickets to an SK show and lost all excitement now, because, no Janet

Someone needs to msg Sam asap and tell him to give us what we all want, Janet Fucking Weiss on drums! QUASI FTW

Just to elaborate a lil more...

I think for a lot of people I know that got into SK, Corins vocals are very raw and in your face, and definitely take some getting used to her voice. I know theres plenty of negative comments about her right here on the boards from back when they toured with PJ. And lets be honest, Carrie is far from a great guitar player. NOT saying shes bad by any means. But most of the SK fans I know, tend to like Carrie more than Corin, or Corin more than Carrie, but, one thing we all always agreed on.... Janet Fucking Weiss fucking rocks! Even the PJ fans that hated SK opening for PJ would say "but the drummer was amazing" Hell, I remember some of us even saying if Matt ever leaves PJ, Janet is about the only option left. So yeah, SK with no Janet behind the skins is going to be a HUGE hole. Ya might as well put Meg White back there because no ones going to live up to Janet Fucking Weiss

yeah, i dont think Janet thought about leaving the band when they did the album. She bailed now, with the tour being sold, the album coming, etc...
Maybe she didnt liked the new music, maybe the tour was too long? who knows.

This kind of makes sense to me, as the two things that really define SK's sound, if you had to limit it down, are probably Carrie's guitar and Corin's voice. That kind of abrasiveness is going to be off-putting to some. That being said, Janet was probably the only one who could leave and even have it be conceivable to continue on (and I'm even finding that to be really difficult to envision); as big a loss as Janet is, I think if Corin or Carrie ever dropped out it's not even possible for there to be a SK.

I think I'm just surprised by how drastic an action it is; I mean, Janet's really kind of leaving them in a lurch (which is not me arguing that she's not justified to leave), but with three months to go until a tour and an album that she plays on to push, I could see the other two being pretty pissed. It's a very big move to take, and it's just surprising to me that if she was that much not on board with the new music, how did it last until now? It makes me feel like there may be more going on in terms of creative clashes or something that what we're able to extrapolate.

True, with over 20 extra years of playing with them; leaving a band for creative differences isn't all that odd, but there's aspects of this that make it fairly strange.

Right, which goes back to thinking that would have come up during the making of an album over a period of years. Janet Weiss has never really struck me as a pushover.

I'm almost starting to wonder if they didn't already know that she was leaving the band, but she agreed to do the one last appearance together. Which would explain all of their lack of energy / vibes on Fallon. But Janet being Janet, didn't want to announce it as some big "the last time we play together" moment. Maybe Corin and Carrie were even hoping shed change her mind and reconsider after playing the new song live.

If I remember right, Janet and Carrie were the big pushers of the sound in The Woods, and, Janet really was the one pushing for the freak out jams in the live show. Corin did not like the sound, or the jams... the last album and so far what we heard on this one, are a lot more structured. So, Corin may be just as much to blame in this "new sound / creative direction" as the Carrie / St Vincent love affair.

it is a pretty big waste of a great drummer like janet to just get her sitting there doing some generic dance beat.

I totally agree with that, and felt that way about the entire drumming on the last album as well.
