He was speaking on CNN and thinking the way he resigns is blame it all on everybody else, saying he did all he can to save america, but corrupt washington couldnt get it done. He could resign at his own accord and control his narrative with his base. That's all he cares about.

He doesnt want to be president.

It's quite telling that Trump can call a person driving a vehicle into people in Barcelona a terrorist attack, but will not call a person driving into people in Charlottesville an act of terror.

It's possible if he can frame it (to himself and his followers) as an act of heroism; "I'm too encumbered by the deep-seated corruption in Washington and its structures and I have decided that I can be more effective in my fight for (???) as a civilian"

The only thing I think would keep him from going down that road is how it'd look in the history books. I'm convinced he thinks about this often.

I'm on the platty train here. Trump's somehow managed to commit two of the unforgivable sins in US politics in one foul swoop. The only way he gets out of this with his cult intact is some kind of martyrdom.

the full statement from that link just reads as a cover his own ass set of comments. I think most of the Republican bigshots are doing this, aren't they? No one wants to be branded as racists so they put out statements about trumps remarks so far. I doubt they expect trump to change his mind.

Also, would it make a difference if trump did at this point? I don't think so. Backpedaling just comes off as phony, even from well respected politicians, let alone trump

I know Mitt doesn't care for trump so his full text read as exactly you stated. It felt cowardly. Lets just call Trump out, denounce white supremacy, and state "Donald Trump is unfit to be president" and move on.

None of what you're saying is wrong, but it doesn't make moments like this less relevant to understanding current events. Republicans are increasingly unwillling to play along, and the president in turn is trying to primary two members of his own party.

Tax reform is the last tenuous bond they share, and even the Republicans increasingly seem to understand that it will be a train wreck. What happens when there's no longer a carrot at the end of the stick?

On an aprocyphal note: my wife's sister and her husband, who are hardcore catholic military family Republicans...just posted a picture of a burning nazi flag, with a statement that they've now blocked all the "Nazi defenders" in their friend list.

So that was something to see.

My first thought after reading this was: the president has a Committee on the Arts & Humanities???

Better question: Kal Penn still works for them?

I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of those committees that passes from president to president.
