and i thought kylo wears his mask when he's around stormtroopers to conceal his identity/be feared. which would make sense he's a on a first order ship in that scene, because he keeps vader's mask in his quarters.

Fairly certain it’s Vader’s helmet being destroyed yeah. Screen grabs show the mask/ front bit is the big bit in the center post hit.
Why he has his helmet on doing it is the thing.
They have to be fighting each other in that scene

because they are on a first order ship around lowly stormtroopers

The official teasers and trailers are much bigger spoilers than almost anything else. Spoilers are just some extra knowledge, or sometimes speculation that can be right or wrong. Usually I stay away from trailers, but not for Star Wars.

I avoid Star Wars spoilers (not trailers), but I read and watch anything related to comic book movies. I generally knew all the beats of Endgame and Joker before seeing them. I don't think I enjoyed those movies less. If the movie is done well, the surprise factor doesn't matter.

I guess I just said that I have no faith that Star Wars movies are going to be done well.

Sometimes even if it's a bad surprise (let's say you didn't like Luke throwing away the lightsaber), then knowing beforehand could alleviate your feelings about it. But I agree, that if a movie is really good, it doesn't necessarily matter if the spoiler came from the trailer or from an inside source, the movie will still be enjoyable.

I tend to agree. Back in school I used to study every movie and/or play before I went to see them. There was such an academic rush to me. I enjoyed things more, the more I knew going in. I wanted to evaluate how things played out; how successfully executed the choices were, etc.

In general, I still feel that way. But Star Wars is as much about spectacle as story, for me. So I'd like to go ahead and keep as much in the shadows as I can for this "final" installment. I can always go back and watch it again and break it down and pull it apart.

This got me thinking and wondering if Palpatine was the plan all along when firing up this new trilogy. I highly doubt they just decided to bring palpatine back for the final film for fan service. Im assuming it was the plan all along. Then, i ask, why haven't the prior two movies at least alluded to "something darker going on in the galaxy". There have been zero hints at something like this. I think it would have made it far more interesting . Instead, we were just led to believe that snoke was the bad guy, and Kylo was the new dark side enforcer. Because of that, as of now - prior to seeing the film, the idea of palpatine all of a sudden coming back feels.....cheap.

Of course, this can all change once I see the movie.

If it was the plan all along, they should/would have given us more Snoke info. I feel like Rian killed him off just to make things more difficult for J.J.

We obviously have to see how it all plays out. But I personally think --- prior to TLJ --- that JJ did sprinkle some clues in there. There's Kylo talking to Vader's helmet. There's Snoke's "There has been an awakening... have you felt it." Which could point to Palpatine.

So, it doesn't feel totally out of left field to me. However, all of that is conjecture. The events of TROS could blow all of that up and prove me totally wrong. It all depends on how Palps comes back and what unfolds.

I think part of the reason so many of us feel this disconnect with TLJ (no hint at Palps, no Snoke stuff, no Knighs of Ren,etc) is that we waited 2 years in real time for the movie, had 2 years to think and speculate, but the movie takes place like 2 minutes after TFA. OF COURSE none of that stuff comes up.
