Re: The Running Thread

I ran straight thru downtown and back in the wee small hours after work last night. Felt like some sort of zombie film roleplaying. Eerie but thrilling.
That looked fun. I've had a couple races that started pre-dawn, but only done a couple of night runs ever. Seems like a totally different vibe.washing machine wrote:I ran straight thru downtown and back in the wee small hours after work last night. Felt like some sort of zombie film roleplaying. I've done a run at that hour a few times, but this was the longest route so far. Feels a little disorienting for your pace not having long range vision, but I'm not really going for speed or anything on a run like that. Just zoning out to Mogwai on headphones and eating up some weekly mileage to blow off steam. Probably wouldn't try it anywhere but the well lit downtown corridor around here though, for safety reasons.ghost wrote:That looked fun. I'd kudos you on Strava if I could. How many miles for the week?tragabigzanda wrote:Treadmill: 3.75 miles
Walk to/from gym: 2 miles
Total of 11k steps / 540 cals
hot lady cats, specifically.wease wrote:Did it chase any cats?
I say unless the 10k goal is really important to you, do whatever seems most sustainable to you long term. Running > not running. The longer distances will come eventually.washing machine wrote:Currently deciding whether or not to push harder next week or scale back then build on that for rest of July. I am at close to 15 mile weeks at this point and I recover well from my runs. I go for 4 runs a week, a bike day, a cross train day of pushups etc, and a rest day.
I would like to get to a 10k by the end of this month, but I just don't want to overdo it and burn out. Done that too many times. Feel like a good goal next week would be something closer to 10-12 miles with some time doing short runs on my barefoot shoes (which need very low mileage lest I burn up my calves.)
Any advice appreciated here. Should I keep pushing past 15 mile weeks til I get to the 10k run goal or give myself a "down week?"

It's good to know he's still running.ghost wrote:looks like r2d is doing one of those run 1 mile each hour for 24 hours challenges today
10k goal is pretty important from a morale standpoint. Physically, I don't feel like I'm at risk of burning out right now. Quite the opposite, actually. I feel like I am on the verge of breaking through to a new level and going farther. Pace doesn't matter to me though I do find myself naturally trying to get faster. Mental is a different game.ghost wrote:I say unless the 10k goal is really important to you, do whatever seems most sustainable to you long term. Running > not running. I've been watching you build from nothing at the start of the year to some beastly runs this last month. Pretty sure you said that last year too. Do what feels right, obviously, but it's been a joy and an inspiration to follow your runs around that college town this summer.I dunno if it's just the heat wave sapping my will to run long, but I'm starting to think about going a totally different direction fitness-wise next year. Running would still be part of it, but not the centerpiece. Like weight lifting, cross fit, or working with a trainer. It's been a solid year now of feeling like I'm going through the motions. Plus my kid's blossoming into a little hiking fiend, which makes me feel like an asshole running for 3 hours on a Sunday while she plays Nintendo.
pretty sure i posted something similar last year then fucked it all up by impulse buying a fall 2021 marathon registration
