I think the definition of adapted is very broad. Before Midnight was nominated in the adapted category because it's based on characters from Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Toy Story 3 was nominated as adapted because it's a sequel. Original really means original

Glad to see Sound of Metal get a BP nom. I liked that one a hell of a lot better than Nomadland and Chicago Seven.

I've only seen Borat, Another Round, and Promising Young Woman. I'm looking forward to both Judas & the Black Messiah and Minari. And I'll eventually get around to watching Mank, Nomadland, Chicago 7, and some others. Is what it is
