Binaural was released 19 years ago. I don’t think that was paint by numbers. I also don’t think Riot Act is paint by numbers save for a few songs. The self-titled album at the time was a departure for them insofar as nothing they made sounded like that in quite a few albums. That it informed their sound going forward only makes it “paint by numbers” in retrospect.

I’ll add that there were significant differences between the self titled and Backspacer as well. The self-titles is really more stretched out with Mike McCready much more featured while Backspacer is a more punchy album for better or worse. Lightning Bolt kind of splits the difference between the two. That is probably their most paint by numbers album.
