If he really throws an ongoing tantrum like it sounds until Election Day, he could well end up being the only thing that could ever cause America to cry out "thank god for Hillary Clinton."

You really think he's doing harm right now? I believe he would do great harm were he elected; but in his current capacity, I think he's merely a symptom of a fractured entropy that had been reached sometime over the last decade. Trump the candidate is an entertaining buffoon who, like it or not, is encouraging dialogue around some of our country's deepest fears. Trump the President would be the real destructive force.

By American political institution, I am referring to The Republican Party. And yes, yes I do.

Can I just say I can see it here but online also. People are slipping into a very dangerous complacency. 'There's no way he'll win'. Nobody should even think that until the day after the count.

I've got to disagree with you on this, though could be swayed if you were so inclined. But considering those aspects of the GOP that have merit -- I'm mostly looking at fiscal conservancy -- how is it harmful if Trump furthers the divide between the racist/misogynist/fearmongering faction and the rest of the GOP? Couldn't it be a net positive if the economic concepts of the GOP were allowed to grow unencumbered by hatred and intolerance?

Oh, I think finding a new message will be easy for them. A potentially democrat controlled government is nothing but a series of opportunities to find new republican messages. However...

1. Fiscal conservatives distrust the party almost as much as Democrats do, now, thanks to the combination of the spendy Bush years, the way the Obama administration was handled or allowed to spend, and this.

2. They have been bleeding intellectual voters for over a decade, and fiscal conservatives average more educated than other groups they reach out to.

3. They have all but destroyed their relationship with each of the key growing demographics necessary for the future. Repairing their connection to those groups will sometimes by necessity require actions that run counter to any fiscal conservative agenda.

4. They have no figurehead. Their key leadership are among the people most tainted by this election and it's fallout, and many of their decisions this last week only highlight their ineffectiveness as leaders. They will have to grow new leaders on the fly, and these new champions will have to simultaneously reassure the old guard and be different enough to heal divides. This is not something they have ever been particularly good with, and it's sort of one of the reasons we ended up here in the first place....they have been trying to be more populist.

5. The brand itself is unquestionably damaged, in a way that will be remembered as an embarrassment for decades to come.

6. A more liberal court will make decisions that are popular with young voters and minorities, but that the Republicans will be forced to fight against and denounce, making it all the harder for them to resolve that division.

Remember when they tried to drag Obama through the mud and discredit it him (for being black) for not having experience and was only a "community organizer, lol" But now that trump has no experience and thinks facts are cancer, he is their savior to the system?

Paul Ryan really squandered a chance to brigthen the future of the GOP for himself. By playing politics he really set himself up for ridicule. he could have stood up to Trump long ago and, i would imagine, been held in higher esteem over the coming years, potentially leading him towards a run for president.

The weirdest aspect of this right now is that they are actually sinking to his level...feuding with each other, trying to lay blame on their own and, in many cases, gifting future rivals with endless "you stuck with him even when" ads. Best headline today was "it's everyone for his or herself"...and it was QUOTING one of them.
