What would an acceptable monument to honoring dead confederate soldiers look like to carpetbagging journalists and professors? If even one possible racist at some point was even mildly associated with it, does that discredit the entire thing? Just admit there isn't an acceptable monument and the south isn't allowed to honor their dead because of slavery, so we can have the real conversation.
Just my opinion, but maybe they should look like the monuments Germans have put up to honor dead Nazis?

I didn't think I'd have to explain that.

I dont think there should be any statues honoring any dead confederate soldiers. At least not int he open in public lands. what a stupid thing to honor.

Is the joke that their aren't any? Because, yeah that's what I was getting at. Outsiders don't think there is an acceptable monument possible, so this is all just sophistry and hiding the real argument.

Is that argument even hidden? I thought people were pretty clear that they didn't think there should be public monuments to people who tried to break up the country so they could keep black people enslaved.

Outsiders? Hiding the argument? Aren't many of us Americans debating the argument right now? Is it controversial to say we shouldn't commemorate the confederacy with monuments & statues? Put that shit in a museum and take a pilgrimage if you want to honor them. Shouldn't be on display in public.

I don't have an issue with statues or monuments that do things like list confederate war dead at a battlefield and I don't see a reason to blow up Stone Mountain, but all those statues that were put up in the middle of the 20th century that so many people pretend are relics from Reconstruction... those can come down.*

The article suggests that the statue is wrong because it's NOT actually a monument honoring the dead who fought in the war. But in truth, she really thinks that it's wrong specifically for that reason, but she disguises that fact with another argument.

Why? What business is it of yours? Who cares if they're relics or not? Those are probably the least likely to have been built by racists.
