Well I think that's silly. He's not acting, he IS the character.

There's always a disconnect there for me.
Those are the characters you're getting that impression from probably. In There Will Be Blood he plays a man who creates a "likeable", "flashy" character in order to sell oil. In Gangs of New York he plays a larger than life man who is constantly intimidating those around him in order to keep away the rising tides of change. But with a role like Woodcock in Phantom Thread, he is a much more realistic person. The guy becomes the characters be plays, inside out. Every one of his performances are flawless.
I think I've seen all but one of his movies and they all share the same critique.
How about My Left Foot and In The Name Of The Father? His best work.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I'm surprised she was still available given how this board feels about the Coens. Maybe the doldrums of Nomadland brought her stock down a bit.

What's your take on the scenes left on the cutting room floor? Sounds like Leon got a bit pedo on it. :|
