I'm extremely pleased with the songs that we're just hearing for the first time today--"Pendulum," "Infallible," "My Father's Son," and "Yellow Moon"--and the drops of the color they add to the total package. I'm also stunned at how well the hokey country arrangement for "Sleeping By Myself" works--it kinds of reminds me of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy revamping his ragged Palace-era material for "Greatest Palace Music," almost a deliberate contrast in subject matter and presentation. I'm glad they went this way with it instead of just adding adornment to the original arrangement.

Yeah, I was expecting something awful based on the listening party reviews, where the overwhelming feeling seemed to be "WTF".

I just heard a bit of Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" in "Let the Records Play" .

Two things that really stand out:
- SBM is WAY better than any of the listening party descriptions had indicated. I'm very pleasantly surprised with how that turned out.
- Infallible is nowhere near as epic as the listening party descriptions. It's a good song but something about that chorus bothers me. The melody sounds very, very similar to some pop song from a few years ago that I can't figure out yet. Maybe James Blunt.

On first listen...
MY FATHERS SON IS GREAT. It reminds me ALOT of The Mars Volta. The bass and the dark atmosphere.
Infallible - Ehhh...It should have been so much darker and heavier. The chorus is so light and happy. It could be have been the new Tremor Christ, but nope, not at all. I was liking it at the end when the vocals start to take off. I hate the "Yeah's" in it. It could be better live, I really like the solo. But still, this song could have been great.
Pendulum - Pretty awesome. Not as dark as I wanted it to be, but still good. When that guitar blends in with the vocals and then the fucking Ah Ah Ah part starts, AWESOME. Reminds me of The XX.
Sleeping By Myself - GREAT VERSION. WTF were people bitching about? This is a great band version, I don't care if it was a Uke song, I love the melody, the new guitars, I like it all. Different enough, and better than just with a Uke.
Yellow Moon - I'm not sure yet. They werent kidding when they said Low Light. It sounded nice, but like it could have been better. We'll see if it grows.
Future Days- Ugh, I really gave it a chance. I want to like it. There's some nice things in the song, but BoB is throwing everything he can at a song that's just not that great and kind of boring. When you have to throw fucking mandolins, violins and pianos at the song and it's still boring, you got a problem.

I was definitely feeling that up til LTRP. That thought didn't necessarily change, but that's the point I stopped thinking about how awesome Jeff was on every song.
He's great in SBM and YM as well.
Well, good. I look forward to finding that in listen #2.

It doesnt seem too happy to me either. When one of the reviews said it sounded like a joke i was worried. Theres still some melancholy in it.
I think i prefer it to the Uke songs version.

Just read that this version was mastered for iTunes so the real deal may have a bit more range. Anything IS possible.
