The speed of this Sandra Bland case is fairly unique among recent cases of police misconduct. The span between the story breaking, video being released and the powers that be suggesting impropriety is much shorter than say, Mike Brown. Is this the case of authorities trying to be more responsive and trying to learn from Ferguson or is there something else going on?

I'm sure it's a combination of everything that has occurred so far this year but a couple things make it a bit different. One, this was a intelligent, educated, working class woman. The other, this was a simple traffic stop.

A lot of shadiness going on with the details of what occurred does not help either. Also, I don't think Fox News has said shit about this so that makes it seem even more shady.

I'd say that departments in many of the previous incidents were still accustomed to the old status quo of 'easy dismissal,' and seemed genuinely mystified when it didn't happen that way. Any departments dealing with this kind of media attention in the immediate future will respond quickly, just like this.

Whether or not the old status quo eventually returns probably depends on if any great change is impetus'd before these stories start to produce the kind of alarm fatigue that used to be unique to celebrity meltdowns and civilian deaths in war.

This may be a bit dry to read but it's a good explainer on how vague a "lawful order" can be:

So apparently this woman had cut scars on her arm from cutting herself in the past and also she had another suicide attempt a year or two ago. I wonder how this is all going to play out?

It's not going to end well.

It, no doubt, will end in tears

Are people really shocked she killed herself and wasnt inexplicably murdered by some cop in her jail cell?

Apparently yes, they are.

Disgusting. Shameful. I'm not sure what exactly the issue is with the Police but it is fucking widespread and it needs to be fixed now.

Jesus Christ, even before the shit goes down, that officer's behavior is unacceptably shitty and aggressive. The guy keeps answering his questions and he keeps drilling him. Motherfucker. God this pisses me off. I hope the scumbag rots in jail, and I don't feel that way very often.

Any idea why he tried to drive away? I'm not saying anything here was remotely justified I'm just curious.

He was probably scared shitless.

Would you guys run or challenge the cop or get out and do what he says and worry about whether its all justified later? I'm just asking I'm not trying to set up a larger point.

What does that have to do with anything, dude?

Maybe he was scared. Maybe he was high. Maybe he was in a stolen vehicle. Maybe he was a law-abiding citizen who just couldn't find his license. Does any of that justify getting shot in the face point blank?
