From 1990 or so -- kind of jarring in a "how could you desecrate such a lovely song with such a horrid racket" sort of way, but I love it for how adaptable it proves Neil's songwriting to be.
Saint Etienne have some good songs if you don't mind European dance music that could possibly be mistaken for Ace of Base.

This might be a repost but it's a great collection of Neil covers. Even though I listen to his discography regularly, this reminded me how brilliant his writing is and yes, adaptable.

That St Etienne version was a staple of the Adelaide indie disco scene circa late 90s, in fact I heard it long before I knew the original.

My favourite Neil Young is probably When You Dance I Can Really Love, though Powderfinger and Hippie Dream are knocking on the door.

I used to have some weird cassette with Harvest on one side and After The Gold Rush on the other. I think some things may have been missing or rearranged, but I wore that thing out.

I really like some of the Archives versions of "Down By the River" and "Cowgirl" -- I always thought the lead guitar on the studio album was a bit trebly and shrill, tough to take for 11-12 minutes at a time. The Fillmore, Massey, and Cellar Door versions are all super though. You get more of that cavernous rhythm guitar sound on the Fillmore disc, a crucial piece of the Crazy Horse puzzle.

Here's the Massey Hall version, when Maid and Heart of Gold were performed as a suite. It's incredible, and one of his finest performances.

Mid-80s Neil is one of my favorite periods. He was writing like crazy, even if the best stuff didn't get released.
Days That Used To Be/Sixty To Zero/Ordinary People trilogy gives Cinnamon Girl/DBTR/CITS a run for its money (although those are not appreciated here, for some reason. BTW, The Fillmore East versions of DBTR and CITS need to be heard by self-respecting fan).
