took almost two and a half minutes off Thursday’s time and had a personal best 5k time of 29:06
i read Joey’s post today and thought i doubt i could maintain a 9:18 pace for more than 2 miles, but 9:22 is close enough

As envious as I am of those of you who run on natural trails and in elevation, I'm getting something special from running through downtown after midnight. I went for an hour last night after leaving work. First mile through downtown was full of lights and people. Big buildings towering over me and the bayou up ahead. Allen Parkway contains a running path along buffalo bayou west out of downtown and I took it for a few miles before turning back. The loudness of the city faded the farther I got out until I turned back to see that the skyline was a panorama in front of me. Like I mentally zoomed out from a vantage point and then back in. Daytime, that running trail is packed. Nighttime is so quiet you can hear nature quietly fighting the urban sprawl.
6 miles. 15ish for the week and 57 and counting for July. Last night's was one for the books.

any running tips? I don’t see how people like you can just go out there after not running for so long and pick right back up

Yeah but they're not bad runners.

Joe clearly has a strong mental game. As someone who has always been in shape, it's never the physical aspect that gets me.

Today's run was tough. Heat. Humidity. Heartburn. I had to stop twice to walk and two other times for water breaks. It was hard to breathe. But the legs felt strong and I pushed through. Only did 4.6 miles but I wanted to stop at 2, so I'm gonna call it a win.

4 miles slow and low this morning thru the woods with my baretrek thin soles. First time on this trail that I actually saw some mtn bikers. It's a multi-use trail but I always feel like I'm (at best) intruding or (at worst) one sharp curve away from a nasty collision. Kind of thrilling to be honest. After putting in some work the last few months, I'm very happy that my feet and calves are now strong enough to get some decent mileage out of these baretreks. Feels like barefoot running out there in these things.

if i go 2 weeks without going I almost always add like 2+ minutes to my overall time…i feel like i’m pushing it the best i can

How much pain do ya'll deal with during your runs? I usually deal with some leg tension and pain early on and if I keep pushing it almost always goes away, but I'm not sure how normal this is or if it's OK. If there's any pain at all, should you stop and wait to heal before going again? I'm sure I just need to stretch more and drink less.

no pain…at worst a side cramp or slight leg stiffness

Some pain you can ignore, other pain you should probably listen to. What you are describing sounds normal, tree. I would say that if you get a mile or two in and things just really don't feel right, then stop. Running is supposed to be a little uncomfortable, but a lot of what you are feeling might just have to do with fatigue, bad form, bad shoes, or weird surfaces. Adjust accordingly.
I used to get some pretty bad lower back pain when running. Learning some specific stretches for it for post-run recovery helped a lot, but I also had a eureka moment when I realized the fanny pack with phone+water weight was resting on that side of my body and adding about a pound of weight. Adds up for miles at a time. So I adjust now and rotate it every mile and it helps. Good example of pain you can more or less ignore and deal with.
