They used the current breakdown in gender for the most recent polls in each state, and found that if only men voted, Trump would win 350-188 (which is actually very close to their projections for Clinton right now) and that if only women voted, Clinton would blow him out 458-80 (which would be the largest victory since Reagan '84). Remember: this was just a thought experiment.
