Ten deaths per day in one state alone still seems like an enormous amount to me.

I continue to be unable to wrap my head around the scale of what's going on over there.

Does it? Doesn't seem like much to me. Illinois probably had more gang violence deaths yesterday.

12 million people live in Illinois. It's not an enormous amount and given the spread of infection that has gone on all the armchair epidemiologists, including myself, would have expected much higher by now.

Now, it is a holiday, but its not as if the total was triple digits yesterday.

Germany is a country of over 83 million and had seven new deaths yesterday.

Cool. Not an appropriate comparison at all given vast difference in the level of spread that has happened though.

I know, but as I said, I can't wrap my head around how almost every other developed country has managed to contain this thing (to a greater or lesser extent) but it's so out of control over there.

Deaths aren't the only important thing either, the huge amount of positive cases is highly concerning as nobody yet knows the long-term effects.

I realise these are trite observations at this point.

Just as a note, if it's a two-week incubation period and potentially 3-4 weeks before symptoms become fatal, you'd have to look at the late-May/early-June numbers, a period during which Illinois had around 1200 new cases a day. Not exactly a huge wave.

Yeah and the cdc says 18 days or something on average from infection to croaking. Two week incubation period doesn't seem to be standard either. Possible sure. Are two weeks going by before everyone exposed gets sick? Isn't it more like 5 days on average? We don't know shit. Nobody does. There does seem to be a theme of people extrapolating the longest possible lag periods to forecast their piles of bodies though.

You're right, we don't know much, but one of the things we do know is that deaths start to pile up when hospitals are over capacity--that's what happened in Italy. Can't imagine that was even a threat in Illinois with 1200 cases a day for the entire state, even if many of them were localized around Chicago. On the other hand, Florida has added almost 30,000 new cases in the last three days...

I'll retroactively care about the number of cases if/when the death toll rises. That's all that matters.

Saw some of the pics from over this weekend. Bars and beaches need to shut down rest of the summer.

Dude it's so bad here. We aren't even going to the grocery store because all of the tourists stop on their way to the beach. Just down across the border in SC, Myrtle Beach hotels were at 91% capacity for the whole upcoming week

Philly is a ghost town this weekend, which does not bode well for the Jersey shore.
