That's insignificant. Coldplay also uses a lot of instruments Pearl Jam doesn't. The point here is that Pearl Jam has completely lost the thread - they don't sound like Pearl Jam anymore. I'm fine with bands evolving - in fact, I encourage it. Pearl Jam isn't evolving though. Not really. There's nothing here that they could not have done better 10 years ago, and there are a lot of very disturbing signs.

The biggest problem is that they don't sound like Pearl Jam. They sound like somebody else.
A lot of this album sounds like early PJ to me. More so than the return to form that was S/T.
If we're talking Ten-era, that's actually a pretty legit comparison. But there's nothing going on here that's as interesting as say, "Oceans" or "Garden", and nothing as memorable as "Alive".

I'm pretty sure all of you other than Stip are going to hate this within 6 months.

I am pretty confident I'll still like this in 6 months.

The question is, will I still like it as much as Backspacer.

Only 6 months of time will tell.

Ugh, people are going to like what they like, and I'm not bothered. But I'm pretty bored with those 'People are going to hate this in six months' and 'Replace Ed with another singer and..." arguments. Those arguments are the rhetorical equivalent of Coldplay.

I wonder what the sexual equivalent of coldplay is?

You have to listen to it 27 more times. Then it will "click" and become your favorite album ever.

for the amount of 'this album had to grow on me and now it's my favorite' posts we get around here I'm surprised people feel so outraged by this notion.

Some people act as if it isn't applicable to a lot of music in the world. You'll be rewarded for the amount of effort you put in.

Parachutes is a great Coldplay album. A Rush of Blood... was a good Coldplay album. Everything else is mediocre to bad.
