yesterday was the first day i did a partial jog in the afternoon
it was about 90 degrees at 5pm and i was at our highschool track. i jogged the straightaways and walked the turns. heart was up to about 132 beats on the straightaways and low 100s walking. i was sooooo happy to see that heartbeat come down in a timely fashion
2 miles in just about 32 minutes

Always nice when a niggle clears itself up. A couple weeks ago I had a plantar fasciitis flare-up for the first time in 4-5 years and immediately started worrying it was from switching to Altras. But no, it was from wearing the Nike Zoom Freaks to work on Bucks game days. Shelved those and it cleared up after a couple days.

And the Bucks still won, so I bet you were relieved you didn't mess with any game day juju.
I'm guessing my issue was from 4 miles over rocks, roots and hills around the arboretum while wearing barefoot shoes. Maaaaaaybe my legs are not quite ready for more than two miles at a time in them just yet.

Wanted to improve/build on Monday's run. Just did 5.5 at about a 9:40 pace. Legs are exhausted. But I think that has more to do with the heat/humidity and the cross training I've been doing. Yesterday I did an hour of circuit/free weight work and then went to the beach and swam for about an hour.

Sometimes running is about testing your limits and early this morning I learned that at this level in my fitness, 7.5 miles across a <24 hour recovery window is pushing mine. I didn't break down or fall apart but the legs came close. Found some wonderful silence downtown at 3am, though. Recovery for rest of day today and a full recovery day tomorrow then who knows how far the weekend will take me. Inspired by all of you in this thread.

Ah thanks soma. Any nice words I can find to describe what I love about doing this are a credit to the miles I'm putting in. A lot of clarity in those out-and-backs.

What's your daily mileage threshold and your running background? You seem to be very comfortable in the 5-7 mile range on a run, so I'm wondering if you were ever at a point where you were knocking out marathon or even ultra type training mileage at some point? Keep it up and kudos all day.

My wife started marathon training way back in, I want to say, 2009? 2010? She ran several consecutive NYC marathons. Around the time she started training for her first marathon, I started running. I'd never been a runner at all before that. But she was spending so much time training that it was really just a way to spend some time with her.
At first I only ran super short distances. I'd say I didn't start running more than 2 miles per run until I'd been at it for about a year. Then after my wife's second marathon I started to feel the itch. I started actually getting into it in a real way and ran my first half marathon in May of 2013.
I ran my first (and only) full marathon in Nov 2015. But I've run the Brooklyn half five times. And I've done the NYC Borough Series, where you run a "half" in each of the five boroughs in one calendar year -- the Queens and Bronx race is are actually a 6k and a 10k, respectably, but whatever; long races in each borough. So I ran Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island races in 2016, which qualified me for the Manhattan Half in March of 2017. That was the last half marathon I ran. My PR for a half is 1:54. So, I've never been super speedy.
In 2019 I started to get really bad heel pain. I finally had to take a break in late Oct 2019. I took two full months off with no running at all, and very little walking. Then in Dec 2019 I started riding stationary bikes as a way to keep working out because my heel still wasn't 100% but I was craving cardio. In January I added in some elliptical work and some really light treadmill walking.
By Feb I was doing very low mileage running. 2 or 3 miles a day, 2 or 3 days a week. Then in April of 2020, something happened to my left knee (was fine one day, the next morning I couldn't put any pressure on it) and I had another set back. So, I've been trying to get back to where I was pre-heel injury in 2019 since then.
That 7 miler I did last week was the first 7 I've done since October of 2019. I used to run 28-36 miles a week regularly. For the past year I've been doing 9-12 miles a week. But I'm slowly building back up. For the last two months I've been able to run at least 3 days a week and I've been doing 12-16 miles. Last week I hit 20 miles for the first time since Oct 2019 and that felt amazing.
This week I'm intentionally cutting back/recovering. I was planning on doing three 5 mile runs. But I did a 4.5 on Monday and so I did a 5.5 on Wed. Tomorrow I'm going out for another fiver. It'll be lower mileage from last week, but that's cool. That was always my plan. Next week, I'd love to kick it up a notch, maybe get in 22 miles.
My goal, before I start back at work in Sept, is to be back to 25-28 miles a week.
