You've nailed it. Because I have become more jaded with regards to SW content, I let the inner critic fly with JJ Abrams, whereas with Watt, I'm far more open-minded because at some deep level I still connect so much with the earnestness of Pearl Jam.

This looks like the perfect space to share my 100% serious opinion that Last Jedi is either the best or second best Star Wars movie

Wow. It's unequivocally my least favorite, though I will happily admit it is beautiful to look at. But see, this is where my jaded BS comes in. I'm glad you love it. I wish I could.

and that's all perfectly legit. The unconscious bias element of this is only one part of how we interact with a song. But what you describe is also kind of my point. If you get the idea that Sirens should have a psychedelic base, it'll be that much harder to engage with the song on its own terms. it's not Sirens fault it's not the song you want it to be, and once you're past that it becomes easier to engage with the song that exists and that the artist probably intended it to be. And it still may not meet the expectations you have that align with your taste, or your assessment of craft.

This is one of the reasons that certain songs we go back to at a later date sometimes just click for us. At some point we may be in a mental space to appreciate the song on its own terms. But this requires a willingness to go back with an actual open mind. Not always easy.

I got no issues with Luke in TLJ. I actually like his arc. My issues are stupid, and I don't want to go into them. Mostly have to do with physics and battleground dynamics. The main reason I don't want to go into them is because if I took the same critical eye to the original trilogy, my love for them would fall apart. I know I'm a SW hypocrite.

The prequels were what demystifed star wars for me. I'm perfectly comfortable with their flaws at this point while still getting a completely unearned charge from the sounds and iconography of the universe.
