The point seemed to be to mock recognition of Native culture.

It goes deeper than that. Did you know that every Spirit Halloween sales day begins with a land acknowledgement for whatever shuttered space they occupy for the season?

Is it respecting their culture to remind them they lost?

Is it the native inhabitants of the land that request these acknowledgements or is it the occupiers that feel bad so they do it?

The only time I've ever heard one of these was at a Scouting ceremony where they recognized the ancestral lands of the Tribe that worked with them on the ceremony. I assume the Tribe preferred the recognition to nothing.
