Re: Superblood Wolfmoon
I don't understand why some of you have to confuse a genuine opinion for "hatred". I want Pearl Jam to be good. I love a lot of older Pearl Jam. They were my favorite band for a long time. This is why a song like this is so disappointing. They have the talent but for some unknown reason they're not applying it. I have to guess it's maybe an ego or two getting outta control. Maybe Ed is directing Matt to play more boring. We all know what he's capable of. Maybe they're trying too hard to write songs they THINK their fans want to hear and are too afraid to write from the heart. Maybe they have no heart. Maybe their family lives are draining them. Who knows? Whatever the reason, it's very disappointing and it's not my fault the music sucks.

Re: Superblood Wolfmoon
Still not really sure how I feel about this one. My least favorite part of the song is the generic guitar chords at the beginning (to go along with the generic sounding drums), once the rest of the band kicks in the main riff sounds a little more interesting. I generally love songs that have no identifiable chorus or song structure, but I'm not really sure that this works here. If we could hear this as an album track, it might be a little more appealing. As a standalone single, it's just an odd choice. I was disappointed that the teaser clip was the most interesting and catchy part of the song.

Maybe I’m just too familiar with everyone in this band but I hate when I hear an new song and I can immediately envision each musician playing their part. I hear Matt timing in the beginning. Then Ed’s riff. Matt’s solo. Etc. Songs that capture my attention and songs that I end up loving are songs that are whole band sonic orgasms that jizz all over my eardrums. This song is flaccid.

Re: Superblood Wolfmoon
I'm 99.9% sure that this is not how they see it. This is the music they want to be making and they are very excited about it and proud of it, as they are with every new album they release. This all boils down to what music always comes down to in the end... it's a matter of personal preference. This is what they prefer to make right now, regardless of talent or ability. And, unfortunately, regardless of what we'd like to hear from them.tree_ wrote:They have the talent but for some unknown reason they're not applying it.

skipping ahead about 30 pages in this thread to say that after one listen i don't think this is very good
in terms of production it's miles ahead of the last two records but first impression is it's not a very good song

Re: Superblood Wolfmoon
They're mediocre when they write fun/happy songs, they just are.
They become an average band when they take the Supersonic/Olé/Hitchhiker route, but they keep taking it over and over again.
Nobody will become a fan of PJ after listening to SBWM. Where did Brain of J, Life Wasted or Hail, Hail go? Those were good, honest rock songs, and they were really good at writing them. Even Getaway o Gonna see my friend are above average.
But this fun/happy PJ is turning ugly really quick.

You can call this song the work of "applying talent" with a straight face? Listen to Spoonman and tell me Matt is at all trying on this song.bluestate wrote:I'm 99.9% sure that this is not how they see it. I hate to say it, but this is where an actual producer might've come in handy. Reel this mess of a song in a little.Kevin Davis wrote: The song just feels so incoherent. Not like, "Wow, this is unrestrained freedom letting itself loose on record," but like, "This person has no instinct for how to form a cohesive melody or song structure." I feel like it starts off promising with this almost 50's-surf-rock sounding chord progression, like maybe this is going to be an enjoyable minor track, but it quickly descends into this disorganized clutter of musical nonsense.

If they're going to insist on making this style of song, at least let Stone take the lead vocal. Immediate improvement.

Re: Superblood Wolfmoon
I mean, don't they see the reaction of the crowd when they play this kind of songs?
They can't keep playing them for too long because they're not well received. I can't remember one of this type of songs that managed to stay in the rotation for at least one full tour.
Not one.
But they keep insisting.

I'd take this over Getaway, GSMF and Life Wasted (apart from the bridge, that's gold)DeeDee wrote:They're mediocre when they write fun/happy songs, they just are.

As much as this song sucks, this should not be a factor to consider when writing songsDeeDee wrote:I mean, don't they see the reaction of the crowd when they play this kind of songs?

Ugh. Absolutely not. If this was "reeled" in then it would definitely be generic as fuck. The mess of it is the exciting part about it.theplatypus wrote:I hate to say it, but this is where an actual producer might've come in handy. Also im gonna need specific examples here of "Crowd reacton" for "these types of songs"theplatypus wrote:As much as this song sucks, this should not be a factor to consider when writing songsDeeDee wrote:I mean, don't they see the reaction of the crowd when they play this kind of songs?
What is this type of song? and what type of song generally garners the best crowd reaction?
People get bored watching sleight of hand, and fuck those people.

Spoonman has the entire band committing to an odd time-signature and more groove-metal chug than you can shake a stick at; Matt is still just "playing along" to it, nothing more, it's just that the bones of the song are more complextree_ wrote:You can call this song the work of "applying talent" with a straight face? i like the ¨mess aspect¨of this one. And boy, does it sounds good...Seems the album is going to sounds pretty amazing....but the song its just ok, its not interesting or special. Some cool moments, the solo and thats about it.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.
