"Moved on from my despondency" is the worst moment on the album. Ghastly.

I like this song a lot. But I always experience the same journey, more or less: it starts and I go, "oh yeah, this one is pretty cool, I like the melody;" and then somewhere in the middle I go, "oh yeah, that's right, that's why I always struggle with where to rank this -- it's repetitive and veering toward tedious;" and then the final bit kicks in and I go, "fuck, I love this song! this has to be one of the top five songs on this album!"

Same. When it hits me, it really soars. Other times I'm just ok with it?

I think the lyrics to the more melodic, middle sections are some of Eddie's best, most evocative lyrics, but the lyrics during the more rapid-fire verses are some of his all-time absolute worst. Just one clumsy cliche after another. This one has really tanked hard for me, I don't know that I can think of another Pearl Jam song that I enjoyed so much at first that I now enjoy so little.
Thankfully there are more songs on the album that have followed the opposite trajectory.

That part, the opening stanza ending with “fully grateful mutant messages were heard,“ and the final bit about the hangman are all some of his best.
Ed’s lyrics are always a bit like drawing lines between stars to create constellations: they're at their best when clear and evocative, yet not so specific that you can’t fill in the details a bit yourself.

"Moved on from my despondency and left in the bed. Should I leave it there still sleeping or maybe kill it better yet?" is so perfect for this time in our lives. It gives me that same feeling as the lyrics from Down.

I've been there when Ed's lyrics don't click with you or make you cringe (north is to south as the clock is to time), so I get it. Seeing so many of you not digging 7 O'Clock makes me feel that much more fortunate to have these lyrics LANDING with me like great Ed lyrics from the past. I could easily be on the outside looking in.

I like the song, it's just that line is so bad and I'd never noticed it before. So stilted an awkward. 'The north is to south as the clock is to time" doesn't really have that problem; whether you like the metaphor or not, it at least has a pleasing flow to it and doesn't sound like something that's been run through Google translate a few times
