Man, this makes me sad. I'm not sure any song better illustrates my preference for Jack as a drummer than the studio version of "Given to Fly," which has a sense of peace that is so much more in step with the song than Matt's much less sensitive live takes. Part of that is down to how much speed the song has picked up live, but even Matt's better versions from '98 just don't quite access the same space. "Wishlist," "Off He Goes," "Long Road," "Who You Are" -- these are all other examples of this. I like Matt as a drummer, even for Pearl Jam, but Jack had really incredible instincts for understanding a song's emotional register and supporting it in the most tasteful way possible.
I like GTF to be a bit more propulsive, like the sense of peace he is striving for is at odds with the urgency of the message. Plus Jack's take just feels a bit busy to me. I prefer Matt on this one.
If I recall, I like his work on Long Road and Wishlist, and I think he's good on Off He Goes as well. It is the heavier, more expansive/dynamic songs that he doesn't work as well for me. Brain of J the one notable exception.

We have always got something new to learn, ever until the day we die. But hopefully we can enjoy life along the way, and not get stuck in a negative news cycle.
up here in my tree
newspapers matter not to me
no more crowbars to my head
i'm trading stories with the leaves instead
I remember when
I swore I knew everything
let's say knowledge is a tree
it's growing up just like me
i'm so light the wind he shakes
i'm so high the sky i scrape
i'm so light i hold just one breath and go back to my nest
those lyrics are so good, ugh
Great lyrics.

I get preferring Dave A.; though they're both rock drummers, they have identifiable and clearly different styles and approaches. But Irons doesn't ever feel out of place here, to me.
I wonder if it's more a question of Jack's style; I feel his impact on the songs a bit more overtly on this one than I do on Yield, for example.
I am sure I don't have the musical vocabulary to describe it. It's probably his style. I just notice what he's doing in a way that seems to stand apart from the rest of the song, and I'm usually not a fan of it.
I know what you mean but I like it.
I like Matt as well, but the albums with Jack generally sound better (Merkinball, Yield and No Code), and I think his drumming is a big part of that.

It’s sad that one of the best albums ever released get so little love.
