Astute. Impressively unobtuse.Kevin Davis wrote:"Backspacer" doesn't represent the side of the band I like best, and overall (especially now having these new songs as the "next stop") I feel like it points towards the loss of the dynamics within the band that I thought had the capacity for producing genuinely interesting work, but I have no major objections to it for what it is and never have. Personally I prefer it to the overwrought grunting and yowling of the early years.
"Sirens" would be great if it was just two minutes of the verse melody with the acoustic rhythm and some swirling ambient guitar in the background. The big dramatic production is more than the relatively ho-hum composition is up to.
I posted a respectful defense of your selecting John Mayer's "Born and Raised" as album of the year last year and this is the thanks I get?PHATJ wrote:Kevin Davis wrote:So far I think the songs we've heard from this album make "Backspacer" sound like "Quadrophenia."chud wrote:The bits I like from Backspacer are significantly better than everything I've heard from Lightning Bolt. You people have more than a screw loose. KD, first of all, you have a hell of a memory. That's quite impressive. Kudos. Secondly, I respect your insight quite a bit actually. I was clearly tongue in cheek with my post, but I do disagree with you massively on the quality of the songs on "Lightning Bolt" when compared to "Backspacer". But to each their own right? As far as "Born and Raised" goes, that's a good fucking album. If you are at all receptive to John Mayer's music it is hard not to appreciate the quality of song writing and musicianship on that album. I'll need to try to find our conversation on that so I can remember what you had to say.Kevin Davis wrote:I posted a respectful defense of your selecting John Mayer's "Born and Raised" as album of the year last year and this is the thanks I get?PHATJ wrote:Kevin Davis wrote:So far I think the songs we've heard from this album make "Backspacer" sound like "Quadrophenia."chud wrote:The bits I like from Backspacer are significantly better than everything I've heard from Lightning Bolt. You people have more than a screw loose. This. Yes!dimejinky99 wrote:Was figuring his out on guitar tonight. I'm not master player by no means
But it's interesting how they've managed to totally avoid making a huge big obvious chorus on this. I think someone mentioned that it might not work live cos that element is missing.
I have to disagree, it's all the better for it. Just playing it you can see/feel where it should go, and there's cool options in melody and harmony there,
But none as good as what they've gone with.
Woke up early with it in my head and now have it on repeat again.
These sings play so well together. I think this is going to be the Pj record we all hoped 'they had in em'.
My name is Josh. That was uncalled for!Kevin Davis wrote:I'm just joshing you, J.
Play "Sirens" to your favorite 80's flick with the mute button near the emotional end. Tell me the bourbon doesn't get you tonight.hlniv wrote:Pussy. Fag.PJam_82 wrote:Jesus. Apologies in advance of responses. Me and bourbon have bonded tonight.
Born and Raised was a pretty GREAT album though. ..Whiskey Whiskey Whiskey and Walt Grace are a couple of my all time favorite songs.Kevin Davis wrote:I posted a respectful defense of your selecting John Mayer's "Born and Raised" as album of the year last year and this is the thanks I get?PHATJ wrote:Kevin Davis wrote:So far I think the songs we've heard from this album make "Backspacer" sound like "Quadrophenia."chud wrote:The bits I like from Backspacer are significantly better than everything I've heard from Lightning Bolt. You people have more than a screw loose.
