So the trick is apparently to make a really bad movie with a very popular character, and then you are completely free from the expectation to ever do great things with them or nurture whatever qualities made them popular again.

I never saw that movie.
Looks like a hell of a lot of calcium went into making that forehead, though.

When dealing with serialized story telling after a while continuity gets too complicated or the writers make a bunch of bad choices and the only thing to do is reboot....ignore...or fast forward to years later. Disney will mess with nostalgia for a while but eventually they'll move on to or stumble on to new ideas in the Star Wars universe and things will get good. Until then it will be hit or miss. You just gotta deal and be choosy when it comes to what you go see.

I wonder how many movies they are thinking will get them to the break even point? with all the merchandising and stuff, I think Disney got a great deal.

Reboots are good for stretching a known product's life out a bit, but very rarely do they produce something new that is going to be very long-lived.
The best thing Star Wars could do right now is the same thing they did in the first place: utilize a wonderfully expansive, well-crafted universe as a backdrop for a bout of engaging storytelling, centered around a set of new and interesting characters who are disenfranchised and whose successes we can get caught up in. The worst thing they could do is exactly what they ARE doing: respond to the audience's sense of drought by calling the flood...gathering together old ideas and a geriatric cast for an overwhelming volume of momentarily-amusing trips down memory lane, knowing full well that such a journey will ultimately fail to maintain the remaining value of the franchise and leave everybody with something of a lasting, lingering Star Wars hangover.

The actor is scheduled to meet with director J.J. Abrams next week after taping a well-received audition, and one assumes his resemblance to a younger Mark Hamill would put him in the role of Luke Skywalker's son in the movie, although no actual role has been revealed. TheWrap found no less than three sources for this information.
