Quality/slowly growing on me: Burn the Witch, Glass Eyes, The Numbers

Not quite sure yet/a little boring: Desert Island Disk, Tinker Tailor

They are contemporaries to an extent, and no doubt Noel remembers a time when "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" were omnipresent hit singles while "High and Dry" was something that might appear at 10:45 PM on "120 Minutes" with Matt Pinfield, sandwiched between Pavement and Matthew Sweet videos. I'm sure it doesn't set well with him that five years later Radiohead was being lauded as the greatest band on the planet while Oasis was getting C-minus-level reviews for "Heathen Chemistry."

...and the fact that Americans didn't buy into their "greatest band since the fooking Beatles" shtick from the beginning.

Most of this album is rather tedious. I wonder if part of the disconnect for me is that I just don't relate to the themes Yorke is writing about anymore. I can't get into this kind of personal heartbreak stuff.

The word I keep coming back to is stagnant -- the vocal melodies and the instrumentation all kind of hover in one register without a lot of motion, yet with just enough to preclude any kind of hypnotic or droning effect. The strings, while obviously well done, feel more sterilizing than emotional to me. The album is not unenjoyable -- there are a lot of nice moments, and I'll continue to revisit it, as I suspect I'll hear it a bit more honestly once the hosannas aren't ringing as loudly in my ears -- but my cursory impression is that it's a lot of dressing on a relatively weak batch of compositions. The idea that this is one of their best albums -- or their single best -- feels like knee-jerk hyperbole to me.

I agree completely. This album is doing nothing for me at all, and I am in a somewhat dark place right now, so I can certainly relate. I'm finding it hard to "grab onto" any of the songs.

The album it reminds me the most of is Björk's Vulnicura, with its phantom-limb melancholia. I think the compositions are strong, but I also think they've been very deliberate in what they're pushing to the forefront and slinking into the background to allow the soundscape to contribute to the emotional space they're exploring. Is this Radiohead's most ornately arranged album? I don't know where it sits in my ranking yet, except that I definitely like it better than Pablo Honey and The King of Limbs. But several listens in, I'm still really impressed with it.
