Re: Bowie - Blackstar (2016) & RIP David Bowie :(
Since every attempt I undertake to rank Bowie's albums fails, here are my favorite Bowie songs:
1984
Aladdin Sane
Ashes to Ashes
Beauty and the Beast
Because You're Young
The Bewlay Brothers
Blackout
Blackstar
China Girl
Dead Man Walking
Diamond Dogs
Fame
Fascination
Fashion
Five Years
Girl Loves Me
Golden Years
Hallo Spaceboy
The Heart's Filthy Lesson
Heroes
I Can't Give Everything Away
I Have Not Been to Oxford Town
I'm Afraid of Americans
I'm Deranged
It's No Game (both parts)
Joe the Lion
John, I'm Only Dancing
Lady Grinning Soul
Law
Lazarus
Let's Dance
Life on Mars?
Little Wonder
Looking for Water
Modern Love
Moonage Daydream
A New Career in a New Town
Outside
Queen Bitch
Rebel Rebel
Scary Monsters
Sons of the Silent Age
Soul Love
Starman
The Stars
Subterraneans
Sweet Thing
Teenage Wildlife
Telling Lies
Time
Valentine's Day
We Prick You
It's a long list, I know. But Bowie is one of my favorite artists ever, and he had a long career.

Hey, thanks LV! Some familiar tunes and thus far mutual favorites on that list (isn't "A New Career in a New Town" a beaut?). That will serve as a handy shopping guide of sorts as I peruse the Youtubes.

As an aside, "Moss Garden" on "Heroes" makes me want to get blazed and move to Colorado and do some yoga with Strat. What a soul-soother.

I am generally in love with just about everything in Bowie's discography, but when I go to listen to something of his I go for the Berlin albums, and although I'm not as familiar with it, heathen or reality usually ends up in the mix somewhere.
Of the older stuff I'm big on diamond dogs which isn't musically all that challenging but he does such a good job on it I guess I just dig the album for it's overall quality... the feeling of it is pretty on key for me, can't explain better than that.
and while it was easily his most commercial album, there's some really good tracks on let's dance, like ricochet...
I think most of his stuff is very solid, and usually different from anything else he did, consistently, which is a draw for me as well, although given a choice, I wouldn't bother with young Americans ever again.
really though, anything you want to listen to for the first time of his is probably a worthwhile thing to spend some time on, he's like no one else, except the musicians who emulated him later on.

Life on Mars? is always one of the songs that immediately pops up in the "what's your favorite song of all time" conversation. Whaat a fucking brilliant piece of art.

Thanks, Malice -- I haven't been too impressed with "Young Americans" either, though the title track stops time for me. I absolutely adore it -- I can never listen to it just once. I too have loved the Berlin albums, and am looking forward to digging deeper into "Lodger."

I probably should have included "Young Americans" on my list.

I would've included Panic in Detroit, but I can let you pass on that one.

I was at Barnes and Noble the other night and picked up "Hunky Dory" and -- since they didn't have "Scary Monsters" -- "Diamond Dogs."Kevin Davis wrote:I was kind of tentatively eyeing "Hunky Dory" and "Scary Monsters" as my third round of Bowie purchases.
Does Nick Cave cite Bowie as an influence? A lot of Bowie's diction and vocal mannerisms on "Diamond Dogs" put me in mind of Nick Cave.
